Mobile Mysticks News Release
In the Net: Mysticks goaltender Greg Hewitt continues his streak of consecutive starts. With a start in Saturday's 2-1 loss at Jackson, Hewitt has now started 37 of the Mysticks last 38 games. Hewitt missed the Mysticks 2-1 win over the Columbia Inferno back on January 15th.
Southeastern Domination: The Mysticks remain unbeaten this season against the Southeastern Division with a 4-2 win over the Pee Dee Pride on Thursday and a 5-4 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths on Friday. The Mysticks are now 11-0-2 this season against the Southeastern Division.
Ready for Battle: The Mysticks faced a tough foe in the Pee Dee Pride on Thursday. The Mysticks and the Pride combined for 40 minutes in penalty minutes from fights. Brent Wishart, Kevin Grimes and Blue Bennefield tangoed twice for the Mysticks.
Hats: Blue Bennefield tallied his first professional hat trick in the Mysticks 5-4 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths on Friday. Hugues Gervais is the only other Mystick this season to pick up three goals in a game. Gervais has accomplished the feat twice, the first on November 22nd and the second on January 13th.
On the Road: The Mysticks are in the middle of a 5 game road trip. The Mysticks are currently 2-1-0 on the trip and travel to South Carolina overnight from Sunday to Monday and face the Stingrays on Tuesday before moving on to Greenville on Wednesday.
For 100: Hugues Gervias picked up his 96th assist as a Mystick in Mobile's 5-4 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths on Saturday. Gervais already picked up his 100th goal as a Mystick earlier this season.
Game Winner: B.J. Kilbourne added his 5th game winning goal of the season in Friday's 5-4 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths. Jason Elders has four and Hugues Gervais has three game winning goals on the season.
In the Hunt: The Mysticks are in a playoff hunt with the Jackson Bandits, New Orleans Brass, Baton Rouge Kingfish and the Arkansas RiverBlades. Just seven points separate the fourth place Jackson Bandits and the last place Arkansas RiverbBlades. The Mysticks are currently in sixth place with 68 points.
Tee Time anyone? The Mysticks 7th annual Happy Gilmore golf tournament is right around the corner on Monday, March 25, 2002. Registration is underway. Play a round with your favorite Mystick player. March 14, Mysticks 4, @ Pee Dee 2
Mike Vigilante poked a loose puck past Pride goaltender J.R. Prestifillippo to give the Mysticks a 1-0 lead on the power play. Pee Dee tied the contest up at the 5:35 mark of the second period as Scott Kriton bounced a puck off Greg Hewitt and into the back of the net. Allan Sirois gave the Pride a 2-1 lead five minutes later as he tapped a loose puck sitting on the goal line into the net. Hugues Gervais answered for the Mysticks on the power play just a minute later as he fired a one timer past Prestafilippo off a pass from John Sadowski to tie the game up at two. Ryan Knox broke the 2-2 tie as he intercepted a breakout pass in the Pride zone and beat Prestafilippo at the 9:08 mark of the third. Hugues Gervais added his second of the contest with 29 seconds remaining into the empty net.
March 15, Mysticks 5, @ Columbus 4
Blue Bennefield gave the Mysticks a 1-0 lead as he pushed a loose puck sitting on the goal line back in behind Alex Fomitchev just 4:11 into the contest. The Cottonmouths answered on the power play as Justin Kearns fired a laser from the top of the left wing faceoff circle that beat Greg Hewitt at the 7:28 mark of the first period. Brett Mills deflected Hugues Gervais' shot from the slot at the 3:04 mark of the first period to give the Mysticks a 2-1 lead. Columbus tied the game up at two just 3:19 into the second period as Darren McAusland beat Greg Hewitt on a two-on-one break. Mike Omicioli gave the Cottonmouths a 3-2 lead about five minutes later as he beat Hewitt on a centering pass from Terry Marchant. Blue Bennefield tied the game up at three as he lifted a loose puck over the head of an outstretched Fomitchev. Bennefield gave the Mysticks a lead they would never relinquish at the 4:54 mark of the third period as he pushed a puck past Fomitchev for a hat-trick. B.J. Kilbourne extended the Mysticks lead to 2 as he fired a shot from the left face-off cirlce past Fomitchev for his fifth power play goal of the season.
March 16, Mysticks 1, @ Jackson 2
Mike Oliveria opened the scoring as he broke down the left wing side past the Mysticks defense and fired a shot past Greg Hewitt at the 10:01 mark. A scrum in front of the Mysticks net led to Jackson's second goal with 3:52 left in the first period. Chris Longo pushed the loose puck past Hewitt for the two goal lead. J.P. O'Connor cut the Bandits lead to one late in the second period as he deflected Josh Harrold's shot from the point past Mike Tamburro to get the Mysticks on the board.
This Week's Games:
Tuesday, March 19th, @ South Carolina, 6:00 p.m. The Mysticks first and only meeting this season against the Singrays this season. South Carolina bounced the Mysticks out the Kelly Cup playoff in double overtime of game five of the semifinals. The Mysticks are still unbeaten against the Southeastern Division this season.
Wednesday, March 20th, @ Greenville, 6:05 p.m.
Mysticks beat the Grrrowl 3-2 in shootout on December 7th at the Mobile Civic Center. The Mysticks went 0-5 on the power play while Greenville went 1-5 with the extra skater. The Mysticks are 2-4-0 all time against the Grrrowl.
Friday, March 22nd, vs. Macon, 7:30 p.m.
Mysticks won first two meetings against the Whoopee, both in Macon. Simon Lajeunesse blanked the Whoopee 2-0 on November 8th, while Greg Hewitt picked up the 3-2 shoot out win on November 23rd. The Mysticks are 2-0-0 all time against the Whoopee.
Saturday, March 23rd, @ Jackson, 7:00 p.m.
Jackson leads the season series 6-0-0, while the Mysticks have picked up three points against the Bandits. Jackson has beaten the Mysticks 2-1 on four different occasions this season, one in overtime and one in a shootout. The Bandits now lead the all time series 8-9-4.
Currently:
The Mysticks are in sixth place in the ECHL's Southwestern divison, just one point out of a playoff spot behind New Orleans. Mobile is 26-22-16 for 68 points through 64 games played. The Mysticks have one game at hand on Jackson, New Orleans and Arkansas and three games at hand on Baton Rouge.
