Alaska Aces News Release
New Players Join Team For Final Run at the Cup
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â After recording the largest snowfall in the state over the past 47 years (24 hours, 28.6 inches), the Anchorage Aces (18-37-9) recorded another first of the year. They beat the Tacoma Sabercats (27-27-6) in a wild come from behind victory Sunday at the Tacoma Dome. Sunday's victory over the Sabercats was only the fourth ever in 31 games spanning five years for the Aces in Tacoma. The Aces went 1-1-1 this last week.
Thursday, Marty Flichel scored with a breakaway goal with eight minutes left in the game to break a 3-3 tie and secure victory to the home team Sabercats.
Anchorage fought back from two goals down in the second period by pelting Tacoma goaltender David Goverde with a barrage of shots. Goverde snapped his own mark by five, recording an astonishing 48 saves in the game. His total was one short of the West Coast Hockey League most saves by a goaltender this season set by Olie Sundstrom December 1.
Bobby Cunningham, Dean Larson and Tobin Praznik each scored for the Aces.
Saturday, the Sabercats battled a resilient Aces team, but the Tacoma club prevailed 5-4 in a shootout.
The shootout went to sudden death after both teams scored once in the first five rounds. Jarret Whidden sealed the victory for the Sabercats as he beat Aces goalie Jamie McCaig with four moves in front of the net.
Aces Winger Tobin Praznik scored twice and defenseman Jason Simon notched the equalizer in just his second game with the team.
Last night, Anchorage and Tacoma waged a back and forth contest, with most of the scoring being done in the final period. Anchorage snapped Tacoma's 3-game winning streak by scoring 4 goals in the third period to win the game 5-3. Tobin Praznik and Paul Williams each scored two goals apiece to pace the Aces, while Tim Lovell notched 2 assists for the Sabercats.
