BRASS NEEDS FOUR WINS TO BREAK FRANCHISE RECORD

March 18, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
New Orleans Brass News Release

(3/18/02) The New Orleans Brass of the East Coast Hockey League is in a heated battle for a playoff spot with two weeks left in the 72-game regular season. The Brass can set a new franchise record for wins in a season by claiming four of the last seven games.

This accomplishment will not necessarily clinch a playoff spot. In the standings, New Orleans is currently in fifth place in the Southwest Division. Jackson is two points ahead of the Brass in fourth place, and Mobile is one point behind the Brass in sixth place. The top five teams in the division qualify for the postseason. The Brass has qualified for the playoffs and finished with a winning record in each of the four years the team has been in existence. The Brass' season high for wins came in 1997-98 and again in 1999-2000.

Of the remaining seven games, four are at home and three are away. This week, the Brass will battle Mississippi on Wednesday at the New Orleans Arena, visit the Sea Wolves in Biloxi on Friday, and play at home on Saturday and Sunday vs. Baton Rouge and Pensacola, respectively.

LAST WEEK: The Brass won a pair of road games in Baton Rouge on Thursday and Saturday. Steve Cheredaryk's goal in overtime lifted the Brass to a 2-1 victory on Thursday. After Friday's 3-0 loss to Peoria at the New Orleans Arena, the Brass went back to Baton Rouge and won on Saturday, 6-5 in a shootout. George Awada posted two goals, including the game-winner, plus one assist. Matt Demarski scored twice, giving him seven goals in nine games since coming to New Orleans in a February 26 trade with Florida.

VOGEL WATCH: Goaltender Ron Vogel needs one win to tie Martin Villeneuve's franchise records for wins in a season (26) and in a career (43). Vogel already holds Brass records for goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts.

FOUR HOME GAMES LEFT: The Brass will host Mississippi on Wednesday, Baton Rouge on Saturday and Pensacola in Sunday's matinee. The games on Wednesday and Saturday start at 7:05pm. March 24 is the only Sunday home game for the Brass this season. The Brass and the Pensacola Ice Pilots meet at 3:05pm, preceded by the Cox Communications Safe Family Fun Fair at the New Orleans Arena.
