Fresno Falcons News Release
Team to Open Play at New Arena in 2003-2004
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons Professional Hockey club has signed a letter of intent with California State University, Fresno, to play its West Coast Hockey League home contests at the soon to be completed Save Mart Center.
The $100-plus million Save Mart Center is already under construction on the Fresno State campus and is scheduled to be finished by the fall of 2003. Upon completion, the Falcons will move from their current home at Selland Arena and play their full 36-game home schedule at the Save Mart Center beginning with the 2003-2004 WCHL campaign.
"We feel that this move to the Save Mart Center will help solidify our place as a top-quality entertainment choice in the Fresno community, and it will help put our franchise in the national spotlight as an example of how professional sports teams should and need to be operated," said Chandar Sports California Chairman Charles Davenport.
"Fresno Falcons Professional Hockey is committed to providing our customers with the best entertainment experience possible, and we are thrilled to be able to showcase our product in what will be a state of the art entertainment venue," Davenport went on to say. "We feel that Falcons Hockey and the Save Mart Center are an absolutely perfect fit."
The terms of the letter of intent include an initial lease term of five years as well as options for extensions of up to ten years beyond the initial term. Chandar Sports California is a holding company for sports and entertainment properties and the owner of both the Falcons and WCHL-expansion Las Vegas Wranglers.
The Falcons are currently on pace to set their second consecutive single season attendance record, which is approaching 200,000 fans this season. Through 30 home games at Selland Arena this year, the club is also averaging a franchise-record 5,848 fans per game. The team continues a five-game home stand this Friday and Saturday night against the Anchorage Aces beginning at 7:30 p.m. each evening.
