Third Period Comeback Lifts Bears over P-Bruins 2-1
March 30, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Hershey, PA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Hershey Bears Saturday night 2-1 in the final game of their three-game road trip. The P-Bruins got their lone goal from Lee Stempniak while Zane McIntyre made his 42nd start of the season in net.
Coming off a three-point game last night, Stempniak stayed hot and gave Providence the lead 2:15 into the first. Between the hashes, he held the puck, delayed and fired a wrister past the glove of Ilya Samsonov. Peter Cehlarik and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson earned assists on Stempniak's sixth goal of the season as Providence went up 1-0. The rest of the period was evenly matched with each side getting chances, but the Bears could not get the puck through McIntyre. Devante Smith-Pelly rang a shot off the post and Riley Barber was robbed on a breakaway by McIntyre as the Bruin goaltender kept Providence up by one into the first intermission.
The second period was a different story, as despite neither side scoring a goal Providence dominated offensively. The team, aided by over six minutes of power play time, had a majority of the zone time but just could not get anything by Samsonov. The Bears struggled to find momentum as it took them over 12 minutes to fire their first shot on McIntyre in the period. The P-Bruins outshot Hershey 13-2 in the frame, but still led just 1-0 after two.
The Bears turned things around in the third, needing only 17 seconds to tie the score. Good passing from Jayson Megna and Nathan Walker set up Devante Smith-Pelly alone in the left slot. Providence lost track of him, and he hit the open net for his sixth goal of the season to make things 1-1. Midway through the period, Hershey took their first lead of the night as they took advantage of a power play. Garrett Pilon fired a shot that McIntyre made a nice save on, but the rebound went to Joe Snively in front. He put it in for his first career goal and gave his club a 2-1 lead. The P-Bruins continued to have their chances, including some late power plays, but Samsonov proved too tough and Providence fell 2-1.
McIntyre stopped 17 of 19 shots while Samsonov stopped 28 of 29 shots. Providence was 0-7 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins are back in action Friday night when they welcome the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to town for a 7:05pm face off at the Dunk.
