BINGHAMTON - The Rochester Americans scored with just over a minute remaining in the third period to defeat the Binghamton Devils, 6-4 in front of 4,502 on Saturday night at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
Binghamton scored back-to-back power-play goals in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. Blake Pietila opened the scoring with his 18th of the year just 4:10 into the game with assists from Eric Tangradi and John Quenneville.
After Tage Thompson tied the game up for Rochester, Nick Lappin added his 19th of the year on the power play as well with 4:42 left in the first for a 2-1 lead. Quenneville found Lappin at the top of the crease and he tapped the puck by Wedgewood.
Ludvig Larsson got in on the first-period scoring at 19:08 as he intercepted the puck and lifted a backhander over the right shoulder of goaltender Scott Wedgewood. The goal was his first as a pro, unassisted, and the Devils took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
Early in the second period, CJ Smith threw the puck towards the net and it slipped under Cam Johnson to pull Rochester's deficit within one, 3-2. The goal was Smith's 26th of the year, unassisted, and Binghamton took a one-goal lead to the third period.
Rochester scored four goals in the third period for the 6-4 victory. Smith and Remi Elie scored back-to-back to give the Amerks a 4-3 lead at 11:33 of the third. Ryan Schmelzer responded to tie the game for the Devils with his 13th of the year with 6:42 remaining.
Rochester's Eric Cornel tipped in a shot from the right point for the eventual game-winning goal with 1:36 to go in regulation. Nathan Paetsch added an empty netter for the two-goal win.
Johnson stopped 41 of 46 in the loss while Wedgewood stopped 16 in the win.
