MENGKE MANIA: "Mengke Mania" is running rampant in Huntsville, Ala., and to keep up with the demand, the Flight is offering the latest in NBDL must-have wear. January 1, when the Flight host Asheville, is Mengke Bateer T-shirt Night. The first 500 fans will receive a free Mengke T-shirt, compliments of the Flight, the Jade Palace and the Huntsville Chinese Association.
THE LONG...Twenty-three percent of the 60 players on current NBDL rosters are at least 6-10. Two are listed at 7-0, five at 6-11 and seven are 6-10. Florida guard Darius Rice and Columbus forward Scott Merritt lead the scoring among this group, averaging 12.7 and 12.5 points, respectively. Merritt's 6.9 rebounds is tops in that category, with Fayetteville forward Ernest Brown close behind at 6.8.
AND SHORT OF IT: Conversely, only three players are listed at 6-0, none below. Standing tallest among those is Asheville guard Brandin Knight, who averages 9.1 points per game and is fourth in the league in both assists (5.5) and steals (1.8)
TWIN: "This Week in the NBDL", the weekly live magazine style show that features the NBA's minor league, airs Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on NBA TV. This week's all-access feature is "Christmas in the D-League". In addition to highlights and news, there will also be interviews with Roanoke point guard Cory Alexander and head coach Kent Davison, as well as Huntsville forward Joe Shipp.
NBDL QUIZ: Who is the only team to win both the NBDL regular season and postseason championships in the same year?
SCOUT TALK: NBA TV's "NBDL Game of the Week" show airs Thursday at 4:30 p.m. ET, featuring footage from Huntsville's 112-101 win at Roanoke on December 23. NBA scouts Michael Born of the Portland Trail Blazers and Mark Freidinger of the San Antonio Spurs will break down the play of Huntsville's Damone Brown, Antoine Pettway and Joe Shipp, as well as Roanoke's James Thomas and Cory Alexander.
SPEAKING OF SCOUTS: There are already 21 NBA scouts credentialed for the MLK Showcase, which will feature every NBDL team in six games over two days. The event is scheduled for January 16-17 at the Columbus (Ga.) Civic Center, with game times at 11 a.m., 2 and 5 p.m. ET.
NAPPY ROOTS: Atlantic Recording artists Nappy Roots will perform following the first day of play in the MLK Showcase. The concert is free with the purchase of a ticket to the day's games. Come hear the latest from Skinny Deville, Ron Clutch, Big V, R. Prophet, Scales and B. Stille.
