Barons rally to take out Moose
December 29, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
A late third period goal and overtime marker rallied the Cleveland Barons to a 3-2 victory over the Manitoba Moose Tuesday night. Jason King had two shorthanded goals for Manitoba and Robert McVicar made 42 saves in the defeat. The Moose play again Friday at 4:00 p.m. against Chicago.
Earlier today, the Moose announced that they have signed Columbia defenceman Greg Amadio to a pro-tryout contract and recalled him from the Inferno. Amadio suited up for tonight's game, playing in his first career AHL match.
Making his first start of the season in goal tonight for the Moose was netminder Robert McVicar. McVicar was recalled from Columbia just before Christmas to replace Alex Auld who was representing Canada in Davos, Switzerland at the Spengler Cup.
After being shut out on Monday, the Barons drew first blood tonight. Left winger Nick Bootland put the puck past McVicar 9:56 into the opening period to make it 1-0 Cleveland.
Jim Fahey jumped Jimmy Roy starting a fight between the two combatants, receiving an instigator penalty in the process.
The Moose struck back to tie the game six minutes later. With Wade Brookbank in the box, Ryan Kesler fed Jason King who scored his 18th of the year and first shorthanded marker.
After one period, the score was 1-1 and shots were 13-9 in favour of Cleveland.
The Barons continued to take the play to Manitoba in the second, testing McVicar. However, the Brandon native was very good in the middle frame, turning aside all 15 shots he faced to preserve the 1-1 draw.
The Moose only had six shots in the second as Cleveland had a decided 28-15 edge in the game overall.
In the second intermission, the ice had to be flooded twice after the Zamboni broke down which caused some delays before the start of the third.
Nathan Smith was stymied by Dimitri Patzold 1:39 into the third. Smith attempted a wraparound and almost stuffed it by the Cleveland netminder but Patzold hugged the post and kept it out.
As the third period went on, the Moose ran into some penalty trouble but the penalty killers remained stellar. Through the end of the second and into the third Cleveland had five straight powerplays. The fifth Barons powerplay occurred when Greg Amadio dislodged his net on purpose for a delay-of-game penalty but it was the Moose who scored shorthanded during the two-minute minor.
For the second time on the night, it was King that scored a shorthanded goal. Kesler cleared the puck out of the zone, sending King in with him on a two-on-one. King made no mistake, rifling it past Patzold to give the Moose a 2-1 lead.
Midway through the third, Alexandre Burrows and Riley Armstrong dropped the gloves with the decision going to Burrows.
McVicar continued his stellar play as the third period went on, making two key saves off Ryane Clowe and Jason Jaffray in succession.
With eight minutes to play, Kevin Bieksa took a slashing penalty giving Cleveland their ninth powerplay of the night and sixth straight. Manitoba penalty killers continued their strong play by killing off the man disadvantage.
In the dying minutes, Cleveland poured on the pressure. Shane Joseph was able to backhand the puck by a sprawled McVicar to tie the game at 2-2.
After regulation time, the game was tied 2-2 with Cleveland doubling up the Moose 42-21 in shots.
Cleveland had their tenth powerplay of the game and seventh in a row on a Kent Huskins hooking call. After nine misses, the Barons finally clicked on the man advantage with a goal by Ryane Clowe to send the fans home happy.
Clowe came off the end boards, skated in front of the net and jammed the puck by McVicar.
