
Monarchs Allow Season High 48 Shots; Lose To Lock Monsters

LOWELL, MA â The Manchester Monarchs allowed a season high 48 shots and lost to the Lowell Lock Monsters, 4-2, before 5,168 fans at the Tsongas Arena on Wednesday night.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Monarchs, who still hold down the No. 1 spot in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division with a record of 24-5-2-1 and 51 points. The Lock Monsters, who improved to 16-9-1-3 and 36 points, hold down fifth place in the division.
Goaltender Mathieu Garon (16-5-1) lost for just the fifth time this season despite a season high 44 saves. Twenty of Garon's stops were recorded in the second period. Goaltender Cam Ward (8-6-2) earned the win in net for the Lock Monsters with 24 saves.
The Monarchs spotted the Lock Monsters an early first period lead, and then closed the period with goals from left wing Dustin Brown and right wing Brad Smyth to take a 2-1 lead. Center Mike Zigomanis deposited a Lowell rebound into the Manchester net with the Lock Monsters on the power play at 6:07. Right wing Chad Larose and left wing Colin Forbes collected assists on the 12th goal for Zigomanis this season.
The Monarchs tied the game 8:37 later with their league-leading 42nd power play goal. Brown extended his goal-scoring streak to four games (4 goals during the streak) by jamming a loose puck in the crease by goaltender Ward. Center Michael Cammalleri and left wing Noah Clarke assisted on the 16th goal of the season for Brown, who ranks second on the Monarchs with eight power play goals after 32 games.
The Monarchs took the lead 1:29 later with the eighth goal of the season for Smyth, one-timed into the net from the slot. Right wing Tom Kostopoulos and center Yanick Lehoux, who extended his scoring streak to five games (3-6=9), assisted on the play. Lehoux's assist was his league-leading 48th point (20-28=48) of the season.
The Lock Monsters regained the lead for good in the middle period with goals from left wing Lynn Loyns and right wing Chuck Kobasew. Loyns tied the game at 2-2 with his third goal, scored at 15:41 of the period. Assists on the play went to right wing Carsen Germyn and left wing Justin Taylor. The Loyns shot was the 20th shot of the period attempted by the Lock Monsters, who finished with 22 shots in the frame. Meanwhile, the Monarchs had just six shots in the period.
The final shot of the period belonged to Kobasew, who went coast-to-coast and sliced his team-leading 16th goal of the season by Garon at 19:16. The Kobasew goal, his third in three games against the Monarchs this season, was unassisted.
The Lock Monsters iced the contest with the second goal of the game for Zigomanis, scored into an empty net at 19:37 of the third period. Kobasew had the lone assist on the goal, the fourth in three games for Zigomanis against the Monarchs this season.
The Monarchs will close 2004 by hosting the Lock Monsters at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, December 31. The Monarchs are also scheduled to host the Providence Bruins at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2005.
Ticket Availability: 40 seats (singles seats) in the Gold level and 40 seats (singles seats) in the Silver level remain for the Monarchs game against the Lock Monsters on Friday, December 31.
60 seats (single seats) in the Gold level and 1,600 seats in the Silver level remain for the Monarchs game against the Bruins on Saturday, January 1.
