For the Week of March 10th- March 16th

Game Rewind The K-Wings hit the ice four times last week, as they continued their push to the post season. Kalamazoo started the week on Monday (3/3), as they traveled to Flint to battle the Generals. Flint jumped out of the gates early as Bobby Reynolds scored his 30th goal of the year just 32 seconds into the game. Kalamazoo replied back midway in the period when Chris Brooks netted his 2nd goal of the year. The scored remained tied until the second period when Jim Duhart regained the lead for the Generals with 8 minutes remaining in the period. However, from their the game remained to Kalamazoo. The K-Wings tied the game 1:28 minutes after Flint took the lead, when Yannick Carpentier scored his 13th goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Less then a minute later, Kalamazoo took the lead for good, when Shawn Roed scored from the slot to give the K-Wings a 3-2 lead. The K-Wings concluded the scoring in the period late in the period, when Brooks scored his 2nd of the game to make the score 4-2 lead heading into the third period. In the final period, Kalamazoo continued their scoring onslaught as Richard Keyes registered his team leading 27th goal of the season. The K-Wings extended the lead to 6-2 later in the period, when Kurt Miller scored on a one-timer from the left circle. The K-Wings finished the games scoring when Pat O'Leary netted his 10th goal of the season, as Kalamazoo went on to defeat Flint by the final of 7-2. The victory over Flint snapped a 9 game losing streak for Kalamazoo over the Generals; it also ended a 6 game losing streak at the IMA Sports Arena.
The Kalamazoo Wings continued the week on Friday (2/28), as they traveled to Quad City to battle the Mallards. The K-Wings started the scoring in the game when Yannick Carpentier scored his 14th goal of the season early in the opening period. After J.F Dufour tied the game at 1-1 five minutes into the game, the K-Wings exploded with three unanswered goals. First it was Mark Lawrence scoring his 9th goal of the season to give the K-Wings a 2-1 lead. Shawn Roed extended his goal streak to K-Wings season high 6 games with his 15th goal of the year. Kalamazoo made the score 4-1 late in the period with a goal by Kurt Miller (18), the goal extended Miller's point streak to 5 games. After watching the K-Wings take control of the game in the first period, the Mallards answered back with three goals of their own to tie the game at 4-4. The score would remained tied until the third period, when Dufour netted his third goal of the game on a power play, to give the Mallards the lead for good. Quad City's 5-4 victory ended the K-Wings winning streak at 4 games, and extended their winning streak to 3 games.
After a two game road swing, the K-Wings returned home to Wings Stadium to finish off their home and home series against the Mallards. The Mallards exploded scoring the games first four goals of the game, including two from Patrick Nadeau. Kalamazoo registered their first goal of the game 12:09 into the second period, when Yannick Carpentier extended his scoring streak to six games with his 15th goal of the year. With the score 4-1, the Mallards poured salt into the K-Wings wound by scoring three unanswered goal by make the score 7-1. In the third period, the K-Wings would add one more goal, when Peter Roed extended his scoring streak to 5 games with his 20th goal of the season, but it wouldn't be enough as the K-Wings loss to the Mallards by the final of 7-2.
The K-Wings concluded the week at Wings Stadium against the Port Huron Beacons. Charlie Elezi started the scoring for Kalamazoo midway in the opening period, when his blast from the natural zone beat Kory Cooper to give the K-Wings a 1-0 lead. The Beacons tied the game later in the period, when Casey Harris scored on a short handed breakaway to make the score 1-1. Kalamazoo regained the lead in the second period on a Mark Lawrence wrist shot from just below the left circle, however, just 16 seconds after the K-Wings took the 2-1 lead, the Beacons tied the game with a goal from Brent Gretzky. The see saw game continued later in the period, as for the third time in the game the K-Wings took a one goal lead, this time it was former Beacon Yannick Carpentier that gave the K-Wings a 3-2 lead. Midway in the period, the Beacons would tie the game back up, when Michel Beausoleil scored his 14th goal of the season. The score would remain tied and the game headed into a shootout. In the extra session, the K-Wings and the Beacons sent 7 shooters. With the shootout tied at 1-1, the K-Wings 7th shooter, Kalamazoo native Matt Kruzich beat Kory Cooper with a wrist shot to give the K-Wings a 4-3 victory and ended their 2 game winless streak.
Fast Forward The K-Wings with continue their tour of Eastern Conference teams with three games this week. Kalamazoo hits the ice on Tuesday (3/11) as they travel to Adirondack to battle the IceHawks. The K-Wings are 2-4-1 against the IceHawks this season. The meeting on Tuesday will be the last meeting between the teams in the regular season. Adirondack starts the week in second place in the Eastern Conference and are just one point behind Fort Wayne for first place honors. Adirondack posses three of the top six scorers in the league, including the leagues top scorer Hugo Belanger, who leads the league with 128 points.
Kalamazoo continues the week at home with two home dates (3/14-3/15) both against the Elmira Jackals. On the season the K-Wings are 1-2-0 against the Jackals, which includes a 5-nothing loss to the Jackals on January 8thy in their lone appearance to Wings Stadium. Lifetime the K-Wings have fared well against Elmira, as Kalamazoo leads the all-time series with a record of 4-3-0. Elmira starts the week in third place in the Eastern Conference just two points behind Fort Wayne for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Jackals are led by Randy Murphy, who is tied for sixth place in the UHL in scoring with 81 points.
Alban Reaches Milestone With his victory over Port Huron on Saturday, K-Wings goaltender Chad Alban reached a personal milestone. The victory was Alban's 100th of his career. The two time Goaltender of the Week in the UHL has also appeared in 33 straight games, which includes 32 consecutive starts.
Roed Scoring streak Grows to Eight While his K-Wings season high 6 game goal streak came to an end last night, forward Shawn Roed did managed to get an assist in the game. His assist extends his scorings streak to 7 games, which ties him with Mark Vilneff for the K-Wings second longest streak of the season, and places him just one game behind Mark Lawrence, who has the longest scoring streak for the K-Wings with 8 games. . All Roeds Lead to the Net It's just not Shawn that has found a scoring touch, older brother Peter also carries a scoring streak into the week. Peter has scored in his last 6 games, which ties his longest streak of the season.
Streaky Players Keeping with the trend, Yannick Carpentier and Kurt Miller enter the week with 7 game point streak. For both players, the seven game streak is their longest scoring streak of the year. Carpentier also starts the week with a 5 game goal streak.
Playoff Hunt The K-Wings start the week 4 points behind Flint and one point behind Rockford for the final playoff spot in the UHL playoffs. Heading into their game against Adirondack has 9 games remaining in the regular season.
Silent Radio For the this week due to the K-Wings game schedule, there will not be "K-Wings Live". Join General Manager/Head Coach Paul Pickard and the "Voice of the K-Wings" Mike Modugno on "K-Wings Live" when they return to the airwaves on March 18th. The show is on The Sports Station 1600 AM WQSN Tuesday's from 6:30-7PM at Gallagher's Eatery on Stadium Drive.
The Obscure Stat of the Week With their win against Flint, the K-Wings are 1-0-0 on Monday's this season. Lifetime the K-Wings have posted a record of 3-1-0. Kalamazoo will play one more regular season game on Monday, which will be next week's game against Fort Wayne. The game against the Komets will also be the 22nd Annual St. Patrick Green Ice Game.
