Falcons Come Up Short in Road Trip Finale
March 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â Mark Gowan's 53 saves were not enough to lead the Fresno Falcons to victory in the final game of the longest road trip in franchise history as Fresno lost to the Bakersfield Condors, 3-1, on Sunday at Centennial Garden.
Both teams generated plenty of chances in the first period but only the Condors' Nate Anderson found the back of the net. The rookie's 13th of the season at 8:13 gave Bakersfield a 1-0 lead heading to the second.
During the middle frame Fresno gave up a season-high 25 shots on goal but behind Gowan kept within a single tally. The Falcons' Alex Todd tied the game at one off a pretty feed from newcomer Bruce Watson, who was making his Falcons' debut, at 6:54 of the period. Bakersfield would re-take a one-goal lead, though, after Paul Rosebush banged home a rebound off a two-on-one with Jason Jackman at 13:29.
Still trailing by a goal throughout the third, Fresno pulled Gowan on several different occasions until finally Christian Skoryna slid in an empty-netter with less than 10 seconds to go to send the Falcons to defeat, 3-1.
The loss gives Fresno an overall record of 30-24-7 and a mark of 2-10-1 in the season series against the Condors. They limped through the final week of their road trip by going winless in their last four games with five regulars on the shelf with injuries. The Falcons completed the 11-game road swing with a record of 3-6-2.
Fresno and Bakersfield square off again on Friday, March 14, as the Falcons return to Selland Arena to open a five-game home stand. Tickets are still available for the 7:30 p.m. start at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
