GREENVILLE, SC â The Greenville Grrrowl opened a 3-0 lead, then held on for a 3-2 victory over the Augusta Lynx in front of 4,001 at the BI-LO Center Monday night.
The Grrrowl opened a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal from JOHN NAIL at 15:41 of the first period. It was Greenville's 15th shorthanded goal this season. MARTIN MASA then capitalized during a 5-on-3 powerplay to give the Grrrowl a 2-0 lead at 1:11 of period two. Newly acquired defenseman WES BLEVINS scored his first goal in a Greenville Grrrowl uniform at 11:22 of the middle frame, and the Grrrowl led 3-0 after 40 minutes.
The Lynx fired 20-third period shots on Grrrowl goaltender MICHAEL GARNETT, and made it interesting with a pair of goals. Ryan Lauzon put Augusta on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:40 of the third period. And Ryan Crane pulled Augusta within one, 3-2, at 11:49. But Garnett and the Grrrowl held on for the 3-2 win, and moved 5 points ahead of Augusta for the final playoff spot in the Southeast Division with 9 games remaining. The Lynx outshot the Grrrowl, 43-29.
The Grrrowl open a 3-game road trip against the Everblades at TECO Arena in Estero, Florida Friday night at 7:30 PM (Newsradio 1330 & 950, WORD).
