Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx improved their record to 23-33-5, adding four more points with two wins in Florida over the weekend. The Lynx now stand three points behind Greenville for the highly contested final playoff spot in the Southeast Division.
The Lynx defeated the Florida Everblades Friday, March 7 in overtime. The game remained scoreless until a goal by Chris Thompson early in the third period put the Lynx on the board. Florida's Kevin Brown, a former Lynx, evened the score shortly after with a power play goal. The hero of the night was Lynx Ryan Lauzon who scored the unassisted short-handed goal at the 1:23 mark of overtime to seal the win for the Lynx. Curtis Cruickshank picked up an overtime win, improving his record with the Lynx to 6-3-1 with a Goals Against Average of 2.38 and a Save Percentage of .928.
Saturday, March 8 marked the final meeting between the Lynx and the Everblades this season, with the Lynx coming out on top by a score of 4-2. Florida scored first four minutes into the game, but the Lynx answered back with goals by Brad Ralph and Andrew Williamson. Jeff Szwez found the back of the net in his first game back upon returning from a stint with Binghamton of the AHL and Williamson added another to secure the win for the Lynx early in the final period. Tom Draper picked up the win stopping seventeen of nineteen shots, improving his record to 4-4-1 with the Lynx.
The Lynx travel to Greenville Monday, March 10 for a make-up date with the Grrrowl. The Grrrowl leads the series 3-2, dropping the last meeting in Augusta 5-2. The Lynx have yet to win a game in Greenville this season, losing the last one back on December 17th. Lauzon has 5 points (2g-3a) against the Grrrowl and Draper has a record of 1-0-0 with a Goals Against Average of 2.00 and a Save Percentage of .931. Lauzon has 10 points (7g-3a) in his last ten outings and newcomer Chris Thompson has 6 points (2g-4a) in his first four games. The Grrrowl are lead by Krzysztof Wiekowski who has 5 points (3g-2a) against the Lynx, but has only 1 point (1g-0a) in his last five games.
The Lynx will host the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday, March 14 and travel to Charleston on Sunday, March 16 for the sixth and seventh of eight meetings this season. The Lynx are 3-1-1, most recently having lost in a shoot-out at home on March 1st. Jim Shepherd leads the charge for the Lynx with 5 points (2g-3a) in five games played. The Stingrays' Joel Irving has 6 points (1g-5a) in four games played against the Lynx. Irving has 6 points (2g-4a) in his last five outings. Augusta is two for nineteen on the power play against South Carolina with the Rays going seven for twenty-six.
Saturday, March 15 the Lynx will host the number one ranked Columbia Inferno, who has one of the league's best road records at 18-12-2. The Inferno clinched the Border Cup with the win on February 20, improving to 5-3 against the Lynx this season. Shepherd and Josh St. Louis lead the scoring for the Lynx with 8 points a piece. Columbia's Rejean Stringer has 12 points (2g-10a) in 8 games against Augusta. The Lynx power play has been fairly unsuccessful against the Inferno with just 3 power play goals in 34 tries, while the Inferno's power play unit has 10 goals on 42 opportunities.
Player of the Week: Andrew Williamson had a pair of goals and an assist for 3 points in the Lynx's two wins over the week.
Goaltender of the Week: Curtis Cruickshank stopped thirty-one of thirty-two shots in his game against Florida on Friday. He came out with an overtime victory, allowing just one goal in 65 minutes of play.
The four Lynx newcomers, two defensemen and two wingers, have tallied a total of 14 points (5g-9a) in their first games on the roster. Chris Thompson has 6 points (2g-4a) in four games played, Philippe Roy has 5 points (3g-2a) in as many games, Andrew Ianiero has tallied 2 points (0g-2a) in five games, and Vince Malts has 1 point (0g-1a) in five games. The new players have also tallied 35 penalty minutes.
Upcoming Events
Monday, March 10: The Augusta Lynx travel to Greenville for a make-up date with the Grrrowl at the Bi-Lo Center. Game time is 7:00 pm. Tune into Kyle Schultz for all the play-by-play action beginning at 6:50 pm on KISS 96 FM.
Wednesday, March 12: Students with the Floyd Headstart program will be attending practice at the Augusta Ice Sports Center. Practice will be held at 10 am.
Thursday, March 13: Euchee Creek Elementary students will make a visit to practice at 10 am at the Augusta Ice Sports Center.
Friday, March 14: The Lynx host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:35 pm for the first night of Margaritaville. The "Caribbean Cowboys" will perform in the Lynx den from 10 pm â 1 am. Players will be available following the game for autographs and pictures.
Saturday, March 15: The Lynx host the Columbia Inferno for the final meeting between the two this season. Game time is 7:35 pm. 2000 Louie the Lynx Bobble Head dolls will be handed out prior to the game. Doors open at 6:35 pm. Commemorative Margaritaville jerseys will be auctioned off in the Lynx Den following the game.
