San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls have had their problems with the Fresno Falcons this season, but not last weekend. The defending Taylor Cup champs came into the Sports Arena having earned points in eight of 11 meetings this year (7-3-1), but it was the four-time Taylor Cup champs who raised the bar Friday and Saturday nights.
San Diego (38-18-3) regained sole possession of second place in the West Coast Hockey League, now two points ahead of the Bakersfield Condors. The Gulls also have two games in hand on Bakersfield. Whichever teams finishes with the second seed will have home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
NOTES: Mark Pederson notched his fourth hat trick of the season Saturday and now has 26 points (15g, 11a) in his last 14 games. Pederson ranks fourth in the WCHL with 71 points and second with 38 goals... Trevor Koenig played for the first time since suffering a knee injury Feb. 8. He went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals against average last week... Cris Classen was 9-3-0 in Koenig's absence... The Gulls are 30-8-2 since starting the season 8-10-1...
TRANSACTIONS: R.J. Enga remains on injured reserve, but is scheduled to be back on Wednesday... Rob Voltera has been re-assigned from the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears... Mike McGhan was placed on the season-ending injured list, retroactive to Feb. 28...
COMMUNITY UPDATE: Friday: Enga and Trevor Sherban took part in a live shot with KUSI's C.S. Keys, explaining the Gulls' efforts in youth-oriented programs, which also helps the Police Athletic League and Star Pal programs.
Sunday: The Gulls held their 12th annual "Tip-A-Gull" event at Dick's Last Resort. Fans had their opportunities to be served and waited on by their favorite players. Steve West, deejay on 91x, was the MC for the live auction and raffle. All the proceeds of the event will benefit United Cerebral Palsy.
Monday: McGhan and Martin St Amour participated in three different assemblies at Rincon Middle School. They gave a brief speech about the team and themselves before dressing up a student in hockey gear, stressing the importance of safety.
Wednesday: McGhan, Ronald McDonald and a Ronald McDonald House Charities representative will take part in Fox's (Channel 6) morning show, promoting the final two "McDonald's Nights." - March 23 and April 6.
RECAP:
Falcons 2 @ GULLS 3 (SO): Friday, March 7: San Diego tied the game in the third period on Dennis Purdie's tally and won it on Marc Busenburg's goal in the seventh round of the shootout. The game was tied, 1-1, heading into the third but Cory Murphy put the Falcons ahead two minutes into the frame. Purdie tied it midway through the period, deflecting in Dan Cousineau's wrist shot from the point. The Gulls grabbed an early 1-0 lead thanks to Sylvain Deschatelets before Fresno's Ryan Kiley evened the score in the second.
Falcons 1 @ GULLS 4 Saturday, March 8: The Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead, thanks to two goals by Pederson and one by Sandro Sbrocca, and never looked back to beat Fresno for the second straight game. Pederson notched his first two goals in the first period and Sbrocca got his early in the second. The Falcons cut the lead to 3-1 with Colin Embley's goal but Pederson sealed it with an empty-netter and hat trick goal late in the final frame.
THIS WEEK:
The Gulls close out their homestand Wednesday against the Idaho Steelheads, with game time set for 7 p.m. San Diego then embarks on a four-game road trip, which starts with a pair of games this weekend against the Anchorage Aces. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
