Bombers Return Home to Face Cincinnati in Light Game Week
March 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Though the Bombers received stellar goaltending from Jayme Platt, including a pair of 46+ save efforts, the team was unable to pick up a point in a three games-in-three nights sequence against Pee Dee, Charlotte, and Columbia. The Bombers will have several practices and community appearances this week (including the return of "Behind the Bench" at SCOR- An American Eatery & Pub), but no games until a Sunday, March 16 home tilt (6:00 p.m.), which will be preceded by a Dayton Jr. A Gems amateur hockey game against the Toledo IceDiggers Jr. A Team at 2:30 p.m.
Below is a review of the Bombers' ECHL contests this past week:
3/6/03- BOMBERS 3 @ Pee Dee 5
Defensemen Mike Torney broke a 1-1 tie 2:34 into the second period on a slap shot to give the Pee Dee Pride (Florence, South Carolina) the lead for good in a 5-3 win over the Dayton Bombers at the Florence City County Civic Center. The Bombers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 1:22 of the first period when Jamie Ling sprung Ryan Vince ahead for a breakaway. Vince had two chances on goalie Matt Underhill and slipped a backhander into the net on his own rebound. Ling extended his point-scoring streak to eight with his 351st career assist, which currently ranks eighth all-time. Pride defenseman Dan Carriere converted on a centering pass to tie the game at 18:36 of the first period. After Torney's tiebreaker, Matt Reid scored to make it 3-1 at 11:52 of the second before the Bombers Torrey DiRoberto rifled a shot past Underhill on the power play to cut the Pee Dee lead to 3-2 at 15:09 of the second. Carriere and the Bombers Ryan Vince exchanged power play goals in the third period before Wes Goldie scored an empty-net tally to seal the Pee Dee win.
3/7/03- BOMBERS 3 @ Charlotte 5
David Evans scored twice as the Charlotte Checkers extended the Dayton Bombers' winless skid to twelve (0-10-2) with a 5-3 victory at Cricket Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Allen Egeland, Chad Wilchynski, and Kevin Caulfield also scored for Charlotte. Jonathan Schill scored a pair of goals for the Bombers, while Jason Deskins also tallied. Bombers goalie Jayme Platt stopped a team-season high 50 of 55 shots thrown his way.
3/8/03- BOMBERS 1 @ Columbia 2
Shawn Wansborough's two goals stood up as the Columbia Inferno edged the Dayton Bombers 2-1 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, South Carolina. The Bombers are now winless in 13 games (0-11-2). As was the case Friday at Charlotte when he made a team season-high 50 saves, Bombers goalie Jayme Platt was stellar, stopping 46 of 48 Columbia shots taken and helping to maintain a 1-0 Bombers' deficit for over two periods of time. After Wansborough's insurance goal at 17:29 of the third period, Bombers center Fred Slukynsky answered 58 seconds later on a charge to the net. His forward momentum helped the puck squirt through goalie Josh Blackburn and into the net to make it 2-1. With goalie Platt pulled for an extra attacker, the Bombers vied valiantly for the equalizer. Tom Nemeth's shot with about twenty seconds left through traffic wound up at the feet of Blackburn in the goal crease, but trickled wide on the near side by about a foot.
BOMBER BITES: The Bombers' ten home short-handed goals is tied for the ECHL lead and is a new franchise record ... Center Jamie Ling has points in eight of his last ten games (4-6-10) ... Forward Ryan Vince leads the Bombers in goals (26), first goals (7), and overtime goals (2). He is tied for the team lead in short-handed goals (2) as well ... Forward Fred Slukynsky is riding a personal season-best, five-game point scoring streak (2-3-5) ... Goalie Shane Bendera enters the week tied for 14th in ECHL goals-against average (2.84) ... Defenseman Tom Nemeth is second in ECHL defenseman shots entering the week (217) ... Along with the Richmond Renegades, the Louisiana Ice Gators, and the Pensacola Ice Pilots, the Bombers lead the league in overtime wins entering the week (5) ... The Bombers, however, lead the league in shootout losses with eight ... Twelve different Bombers (including forward Patrick Yetman, who was recently recalled to Hartford of the AHL) have been beckoned by American Hockey League teams this season (at least once).
