Jackals Acquire Winger From Wheeling

ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, announced today that they have acquired right wing Matt Johnson from the Wheeling Nailers in exchange for future considerations. The transaction kicks off the final hours leading up to today's 3 p.m. ECHL trade deadline.

Johnson, 26, is in his second professional season after spending parts of his rookie campaign with Kalamazoo (14gp, 0+4=4, 18 PIM) and Chicago (38gp, 8+18=26, 37 PIM). Elmira will be the third ECHL stop this year for Johnson after stints with the Nailers and the Augusta Lynx. In 20 games overall this season, Johnson has three goals and an assist for four points and 12 penalty minutes.

The 6'3", 205-pound native of Bloomington, MN, skated collegiately with Merrimack of the Hockey East Association. In 119 career games with the Warriors, Johnson netted 34 goals with 45 assists for 79 points and 142 penalty minutes. He finished second in team scoring in each season with the exception of his sophomore campaign. His posted a career-best 27 points (27 games) in his junior season in 2004-05 while netting a personal-best 14 goals (30 games) in 2005-06, his final season at Merrimack.

The Elmira Jackals will be on the road for a pair of North Division contests this weekend. The Jackals are in Trenton Friday for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with the Devils before continuing to Johnstown Saturday evening for a 7:05 p.m. face-off against the Chiefs. Both games can be heard live on MAGIC-FM (92.7/97.7) and on-line at www.jackalshockey.com beginning thirty minutes prior to face-off both nights with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off.
