Cincinnati's Desharnais Named CCM Vector Rookie Of The Month

PRINCETON, N.J. - Cincinnati center David Desharnais is the CCM Vector ECHL Rookie of the Month for February.

The 21 year old led the ECHL in February with 21 assists and tied for the lead with 24 points as the Cyclones went 13-0-0 to stay on top of the North Division and clinch a berth in the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Desharnais also won the award in December making him only the third two-time winner since the award began in 1997-98 and the first since 2002-03. The other two-time winners are Jason Jaffray of Roanoke (November and December 2002), and Mathieu Benoit of Charlotte (November 2000 and January 2001).

Recording an assist in all 13 games in February, the 5-foot-6 and 177-pound forward set the ECHL record for the longest assist streak at 20 games (30 assists), and he extended his point streak to 22 games which is the fifth-longest in league history. Desharnais broke the assist record of 17 games set by Peter Kasowski of Roanoke Valley from Oct. 26-Dec. 7, 1991 (28 assists).

He began the month tying his season high with three assists in a 4-1 win at Wheeling on Feb. 1 and added an assist in a 2-1 win at Trenton on Feb. 2. He scored a power-play goal and had a pair of assists in an 8-3 win against Mississippi on Feb. 6 and had two assists in a 4-1 win against Mississippi on Feb. 9. He began a streak of five consecutive two-point games with two assists in a 7-0 win at Trenton on Feb. 15 and had three more games with two assists before the streak ended on Feb. 23. He ended the month scoring the game-winning goal and adding an assist in a 2-1 win at Fresno on Feb. 29.

Desharnais leads ECHL rookies with 57 assists, 26 power-play assists, 74 points and a plus-minus rating of +30 in 51 games. He is tied for the overall lead in assists while ranking second in power-play assists and points and third in plus-minus rating. He has also played in the American Hockey League where he has an assist and six penalty minutes in four games for Hamilton.

The Quebec City, Quebec native made his professional debut in the American Hockey League last season when he signed with Bridgeport, registering two points (1g-1a) and four penalty minutes in seven games, after completing his career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

He played four seasons in the QMJHL and had 374 points (126g-248a) and 127 penalty minutes in 262 regular season games and 43 points (12g-31a) and 22 penalty minutes in 48 playoff games for Chicoutimi.
