Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Brett Hemingway scored a pair of power play goals to help build a 3-0 Alaska lead that held up in an eventual 3-2 victory over Idaho Tuesday night before 4,618 at Sullivan Arena.

Mike Brown, playing on his 23rd birthday, collected his fourth straight win between the pipes to run his record to 5-1 as an Ace.

All three of Alaska's goals came on the power play, beginning with a fortuitous bounce that Hemingway converted into a backhander over the right pad of Idaho starter Kellen Briggs just 3:18 into the first period. F.P. Guenette banged home a centering pass from Corbin Schmidt for his career-high 14th goal of the season with eight minutes left in the frame, and when a wide-open Hemingway beat Briggs from the left circle with 3:20 remaining in the period, the Aces enjoyed a 3-0 bulge at the break.

Alaska managed just two shots on goal in a listless second period, while two of Idaho's 14 in the period slipped past Brown, a rebound by Craig Cescon at 3:21, and a tap-in courtesy of John Lammers six minutes later (his eighth goal in six games against the Aces) after a beautiful set-up by Marty Flichel. But the Steelheads failed to score on four second period power plays, and came up empty with another four minutes on the man advantage late in regulation. Alaska (31-20-5) limited the visitors to just three shots on goal in the third period, and protected its one-goal lead for the final 30:22 of the contest. With their 10th win in 11 games, the three-time defending West champions have moved within eight points of the division lead, shared by Idaho and idle Victoria.

Alaska's hectic week continues with a rematch against the Steelheads (33-18-9) Wednesday, followed by games against the Salmon Kings Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All games start at 7:15 p.m. with the exception of Sunday's finale, which gets underway at 5:05 p.m. and features a post-game "Skate with the Aces," presented by Fred Meyer. All regular season games are broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
