HEAD-TO-HEAD - This is the second meeting of the season between the Thunder and the Mavericks. All-time, Wichita is 35-23-3 and 15-11-3 on the road.
TODAY - Wichita and Missouri close out a home-and-home tonight at the newly-named Silverstein Eye Center Arena. This will be the second road game for the Thunder while the Mavericks have been away from home for the first four games of the season. Missouri is one of five teams that have not played a home game, which changes tonight. In their only road contest so far, the Thunder defeated the Tulsa Oilers on Opening Day by the final score of 3-2. After tonight, the Thunder will not see Missouri until November 7th, when they travel back to Independence. Wichita closes the weekend out with a road game at Quad City. The Mavericks are off tomorrow afternoon.
TIGHT THROUGH TWO - Last night, both goaltenders stood up to the task through the first 40 minutes. David Shantz was tested early and often, making some nice saves to keep Missouri off the board. Things went south at the beginning of the third period as Tyler Barnes and Colin Markison combined for two goals in 24 seconds.
SECONDS - Through three games, the Thunder's best period has been the second. Wichita is outshooting its opponent 31-24 and has four goals in the second frame. Last night, the Thunder and the Mavericks combined for 22 shots in the period.
INDEPENDENCE CUP - Yesterday, Wichita and Missouri announced that the two teams have renewed their rivalry series and will be playing for the Independence Cup. Wichita has won the cup the last three seasons and has had the upper hand in the season-series since the 2010-11 season. The two teams will face each other 15 times this year, which is the most times Wichita and Missouri will see one another in a season. The winner of the series will receieve a donation of a youth hockey scholarship.
THREES - Wichita began a busy weekend last night against the Mavericks before heading to Missouri this evening. The Thunder close the weekend with a road match-up against the Quad City Mallards. This is the first three-in-three of the season and one of seven the team will appear in from now until April.
THUNDERBOLTS...Deluca leads the team in shots (10) and is tied for third in rookie scoring...Danick Gauthier and Ian Lowe each have two assists and combined for 13 shots...Lowe is seven-for-19 all time in shootouts...Michael Neal has the Thunder's lone power play goal...David Shantz won his first ECHL game on Opening Night against Tulsa since March of 2011...
