Perry, Aces Hand Steelheads First Regulation Loss
October 24, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Anchorage, AK (10/23/15)-Joe Perry scored twice as part of a three-goal second period surge as the Alaska Aces (2-2-0-1) handed the Steelheads (2-1-1-0) their first regulation loss of the season, 4-1 at Sullivan Arena.
The Steelheads came from behind on Wednesday night to earn a 4-3 shootout win over the Aces, but had no comeback magic tonight as Aces goaltender Troy Redmann made 11 saves over the final two periods to secure the win.
Idaho jumped on the board first for the third time in four games. Cole Martin's shot was steered away behind the net by Redmann, but Steelheads forward Brandon Magee was first to the puck. In a sequence very similar to Magee's first pro goal on Wednesday night, the rookie walked out of the left wing corner from behind the net, swung in uncontested on Redmann, and this time beat the goalie over the right shoulder to give the Steelheads a 1-0 lead at 15:26.
The Steelheads held that lead until 6:53 when Joe Perry found a rebound laying in the slot and back-handed his first goal of the season past rookie goaltender Philippe Desrosiers. Desrosiers made two solid saves on Tomasso Traversa and Tim Coffman before Perry finally buried the third opportunity.
Six and a half minutes later, Traversa gave the Aces their first lead when a partially blocked shot from William Wrenn rolled in on Desrosiers. The goaltender, who was solid overall in making 39 saves on the night, tried to clear the puck himself and fanned on it, leaving the puck in the slot for Traversa to slide between his legs.
At 18:20 of the second and at the end of a strong offensive zone shift for Alaska, Perry redirected a Coffman point shot past Desrosiers to extend the lead to 3-1. The Aces outshot the Steelheads 25-3 in the second period.
Justin Breton added an empty-net goal with seven seconds remaining to clinch the game for Alaska.
The loss halts the Steelheads season-opening points streak at three games. The Steelheads and Aces face off in the rubber match of the three-game series on Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.

Play of the Game:
With the score tied midway through the second period, the Aces took a 2-1 lead they would never surrender when William Wrenn's partially-blocked shot was mishandled by Desrosiers and rolled to Traversa, who scored his first goal of the season. The goal was a momentum killer for the Steelheads, who would be held off the board for the remainder of the game.
