Nailers vs. Beast Game Day Snap Shot

October 24, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

It's Going to be Loud

The Wheeling Nailers had to wait an entire week, before getting the chance to play a regular season game in front of their hometown fans, and on Saturday night, they will see an arena like they haven't seen in three years. A sellout crowd is expected to take in the home opener between Wheeling and Brampton, which will mark the first time since March 31, 2012 that attendance for a Nailers game at WesBanco Arena eclipses 5,000. That night, Wheeling erased a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Elmira Jackals, 4-3 in a shootout. With a crowd of over 5,000 people, the Nailers will outdraw at least 11 other ECHL teams in their home openers, with one other club (5,289) in reach, and four organizations yet to play a home game.

A Split at the Scope

While Saturday night is game one of the home season for the Nailers, it is also the third game of the regular season, as the team opened with a pair of tilts against the Norfolk Admirals last weekend at Norfolk Scope Arena. The first tilt went exactly as Wheeling had intended, as Franky Palazzese was perfect on 23 shots, and Ty Loney netted two goals in a 3-0 triumph for the visitors. Despite a two-goal effort by Jarrett Burton the following night, the Nailers were unable to overcome a rough first period, which saw them fall behind the Admirals, 3-0. The final score resulted in a 4-2 Norfolk win, as both teams registered a pair of power play markers.

That Was a Quick Call

The goal of ECHL players is pretty simple - play well and move up to the next level. That statement already rang true for one member of the Nailers, as forward Ty Loney scored two goals in Norfolk last weekend, and was recalled to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday morning. Loney was one two Wheeling players to light the lamp multiple times in the first two games, as Jarrett Burton netted three tallies, including two in the second contest of the campaign. The Nailers received one player from their AHL affiliate, as defenseman Harrison Ruopp is expected to make his season debut on Saturday. This will be Ruopp's third year with Wheeling.

Logging a Lot of Early Mileage

When this weekend comes to an end, the ECHL regular season will only be two weeks old, but the Brampton Beast will likely feel like it's two months old with all of their traveling thus far. Saturday will be Brampton's third road game in its third different city, and it will also be the second of three games in three days, sandwiched around a pair of home contests on Friday and Sunday. The Beast started the year with a 580-mile journey to Manchester, then drove 393 miles to Elmira, before 237 miles brought them back home. Following Friday night's 5-4 overtime loss to the Adirondack Thunder, Brampton traveled 364 miles to Wheeling, which it will do again after Saturday's tilt, making for a total of 1,938 miles over a ten-day span.

First Time in Our House

Saturday night marks the first of nine head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and their new North Division rivals, the Beast, as well as the first of five battles that will take place at WesBanco Arena. 2014-15 was Brampton's first season as an ECHL club, and the two sides locked horns on four occasions last year, with all four games taking place at Powerade Centre in Ontario. Wheeling was victorious in three of those four tilts, outscoring the Beast, 17-7. While the Beast will be a new team to the Ohio Valley, there are plenty of familiar names, including former Nailer Stefan Fournier, former Reading Royal Yannick Tifu, and former Fort Wayne Komets Chris Auger and Brandon Marino. Brampton's head coach is Colin Chaulk, who played in three games for Wheeling in 2001-02.
