Nailers Beat Beast in Front of Sellout Crowd
October 24, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- It was a long six months between home games for the Wheeling Nailers, but Saturday night was well worth the wait. A sellout crowd of 5,330 fans piled their way into WesBanco Arena, and the Nailers rewarded them for coming. Jarrett Burton scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season, Derek Army chipped in with three assists, and Franky Palazzese made 22 saves, as Wheeling defeated the Brampton Beast, 5-1.
The sellout crowd barely had a chance to sit down at the start of the game, as Patrick McGrath and Stefan Fournier threw down the gloves off of the opening face-off. The first goal came later in the opening stanza, as the Nailers' strong defensive play helped lead to a shorthanded chance on offense. Adam Krause stole the puck on the right side of his own zone, starting a 2-on-1 rush. Krause elected to make a pass to Sahir Gill, which turned out to be the right choice, as Gill clobbered a slap shot into the net from the left circle.
Wheeling added to its lead with two quick goals in the second period. The first tally came from a familiar source, as Jarrett Burton banged in his third power play goal in two games, finishing off a pass off of the pads by linemate Derek Army. 46 seconds later, the Nailers cashed in on an odd-man rush. Riley Brace floated a pass through a defender to Connor Leen, who out waited Edward Pasquale, before beating him on the blocker side. Shortly before the midway mark of the stanza, the home team added another goal, as Burton collected his second of the evening, set up by Mickael Beauregard's first professional assist and Army's third helper of the period. With 4:54 remaining, Brampton got on the scoreboard, courtesy of a backhander by Tim Billingsley from the right circle.
One more goal was tacked on in the third period, as Clark Seymour banked a shot off of the right side glass and into the empty Brampton cage, while the Nailers were playing shorthanded. That gave the game its final score of 5-1.
Franky Palazzese picked up his second win in as many starts for Wheeling, making 22 saves on 23 shots. Edward Pasquale was the losing goaltender for the Beast, as he allowed four goals on 28 shots.
The Nailers and Beast will meet in Brampton on Sunday at 3:00, before Wheeling begins a three-game homestand with games on October 30th and 31st. Friday's game is Adult Halloween, as well as a Frosty Friday and Flat Screen Friday, presented by Bordas & Bordas. Saturday is Kid's Halloween, with Trick or Treat, a backpack giveaway (1,000 kids) from Dick's Sporting Goods, and an appearance by the Zooperstars.
Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
