South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-The Greenville Swamp Rabbits held off the South Carolina Stingrays to earn a 5-3 win in their Home Opener at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Friday night.
A back-and-forth opening period saw three goals in a span of just over three minutes. The Swamp Rabbits struck for a pair of goals to take an early 2-0 lead. Jack Combs opened the scoring, converting from the left wing on a two-on-one rush at 8:25 of the opening period for Greenville.
Only 1:31 later, Bretton Cameron scored for the Swamp Rabbits with a wrist shot that beat a screened Stingrays goaltender Mark Dekanich to make it 2-0 Greenville.
The Stingrays would respond quickly. Less than a minute later at 10:52, Max Sauve scored his first goal as a Stingray. South Carolina broke the puck ahead on an odd-man rush. Sauve skated down the right wing and beat Greenville goalie P.J. Musico through the five-hole to make it 2-1.
After an Emerson Clark breakaway goal for Greenville late in the first period, the Stingrays scored a late goal in the second period to cut the lead to Greenville 3-2. Stephan Vigier, acquired in a trade with Toledo earlier this week, beat Musico with a wrist shot for his first goal of the season. After a penalty kill, Andrew Johnston stole the puck from the Greenville goaltender out of his crease. He fed Vigier off the bench, and the forward's shot found the net short-side with only 1:05 left in the second period.
The Swamp Rabbits would pull away with a pair of goals in the third period. Josh Nicholls scored on the power play at 6:10 to make it 4-2. The Stingrays would strike to keep the score close at 7:47 as Joe Devin's slap shot converted for his first goal of the season.
However, the Swamp Rabbits would add one more tally on a goal by Ryan Rashid on a deflection with only 1:56 remaining. Rashid's redirect of a shot beat Dekanich through the five-hole to put South Carolina's comeback hopes out of reach. Following the goal, there was a delay as fans threw carrots onto the ice.
A scrappy game was a scrum result in three fights with only 20 seconds remaining in second period. South Carolina's Bobby Shea fought three times in the contest.
