Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ONT - The energy in the Powerade Centre was electric for the Brampton Beast's 2015-16 Home Opener and the team responded in kind, overcoming a late two-goal deficit to force overtime on the backs of their best offensive output of the season, but the Adirondack Thunder scored a power play goal in overtime to edge the Beast 5-4 on Friday night.
Rob Bordson scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner for the Thunder. Bryan McGregor, Josiah Didier, Travis Brown and Angelo Miceli lit the lamp for the Beast, who picked up their first point of the season in front of an energetic crowd for the Beast's Home Opener.
The Thunder were the first to find the back of the net as Michael Kirkpatrick beat Beast starter Eddie Pasquale just 2:05 into the game.
The lead didn't last long as Bryan McGregor picked up the puck on a partial breakaway and snapped a perfect wrist shot over the glove hand of Thunder starter Ken Appleby for the Beast's first shorthanded goal of the season at 11:34.
The Thunder regained the lead just over three minutes later thanks to David Shields. The Beast maintained puck pressure throughout the period and it paid off. Newcomer Didier pulled off a highlight-reel goal as he cut toward the net and beat all Thunder defenders and Appleby with a great shot glove side for his first goal as a Beast at 16:48 to tie the game.
A power-play goal from Bordson and a tally from Mitchell Heard gave the Thunder a 4-2 lead just 5:25 into the second period but the Beast remained resilient.
The comeback started later in the second frame as Travis Brown sent a powerful slapshot from the point that overpowered Appleby to cut the deficit to one at 10:08 of the second period, giving Brown his team-leading second goal of the season.
The score remained the same until the middle of the third period as newcomer Miceli, in his first ECHL game, pounced on a puck near the crease and made a great move to elude the goaltender and roofed home his first of the season on the power play at 10:13 to tie the game.
Late in regulation, Beast defenseman Guy Leboeuf was called for a penalty with 0.5 seconds left in the game and Adirondack was able to capitalize in the extra frame as Bordson added his second of the game 58 seconds into overtime, giving the Beast their first point of the season.
Pasquale kept his team in the game with multiple key saves throughout the contest and finished with 32 saves. Appleby earned the win for Adirondack with 18 saves.
Notes: The Beast finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. Three Stars: 1) Josiah Didier 2) Rob Bordson 3) Angelo Miceli. The Beast will travel overnight to face the Wheeling Nailers tomorrow, before turning around and heading back to Brampton for a 3PM start on Sunday afternoon.
