San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - After sweeping Omaha in four games, San Antonio completed the homestand sweep after defeating the Vihuelas de Nashville Thursday night, 5-3. The eight-game win streak is the longest of the season for the Chanclas and longest since 2018. With 15 hits in the win, San Antonio has now collected ten or more hits in ten of their last eleven games.
It was a rough start to the game for Chanclas starter Shelby Miller. The lead off hiter Zack Granite hit a double, followed by an RBI single from Scott Heineman. Miller then allowed an RBI single to Nick Solak. He also walked two batters and struck out one.
The Flying Chanclas picked up their first run in the third inning. After a lead off double from Trent Grisham, David Freitas drove in Grisham with a ground rule double to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Chanclas would tie the game. Hernan Perez lead off the inning with his third double of the game and was sacrificed to third thanks to Nate Orf. Then, Troy Stokes Jr. tied the game with an RBI single off Nashville reliever Kyle Dowdy. The game was tied 2-2 heading into the seventh inning.
The Flying Chanclas took their first lead of the night in the seventh inning. Grisham and Mauricio Dubon lead off the inning with back-to-back singles. Grisham scored the tying run courtesy of a wild pitch from Dowdy. Dubon scored shortly after thanks to an RBI single from Cory Spangenberg giving the Flying Chanclas a 4-2 advantage.
An insurance run was scored by the Chanclas in the bottom of the eighth inning. After a lead off single from Jake Hager, Grisham picked up his fourth hit and third double of the night with an RBI double to make it a 5-2 ballgame.
Nashville attempted a comeback in the ninth inning but fell short. With two outs, Vihuelas outfielder Zack Granite hit his third home run of the season off reliever Miguel Sanchez, but that would be the only run they would get.
Shelby Miller was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas as he made his San Antonio debut. Miller struggled with his command and with a pitch limit in place he only lasted two innings. In two innings, he allowed two earned runs on three hits, walked four batters, and struck out one.
Donnie Hart recorded his fourth win of the season and improves to 4-2. He pitched two shutout innings, allowing two hits, and striking out one batter. Miguel Sanchez recorded his first save of the season and sixth of his career.
Wes Benjamin got the start for the Vihuelas. He did not factor into the decision as he lasted 5.1 innings. In that time, he allowed two earned runs on seven hits, two walks, and struck out three batters. Kyle Dowdy records his first loss of the season and falls to 1-1 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The Chanclas will hit the road for a three-game series against the Oklahoma City Dodgers beginning Friday, July 19. Right-hander Thomas Jankins (9-2, 3.39) is scheduled to start for the Missions and right-hander Daniel Corcino (6-4, 4.32) is scheduled to start for the Dodgers. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
