Bonk's Revenge: Shorthanded Goal Lifts Condors Over San Diego

Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In his first game back since January 13th, Dave Bonk scored the game-winning shorthanded goal and assisted on Kevin St. Jacques' 14th goal of the season en route to a 2-1 Bakersfield victory over the San Diego Gulls in front of 6,615 fans at the Rabobank Arena.

The Gulls struck first with 6:18 left in the first period, when Steve Hildenbrand found the free puck after a couple of quick power play shots by Richard Keyes and David Svagrovsky. Hildenbrand wristed the puck over a sprawling Ryan Munce to give San Diego the 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

Dave Bonk provided the Condors with a spark in the second period by taking a pass from Sean Venedam on a 3-on-2 at the right wing. Bonk threw the puck on net, and Kevin St. Jacques buried the rebound to tie the game at 1-1 just 3:56 into the second period.

Near the end of a Kevin St. Jacques tripping penalty, Andrew Ianiero took control of the puck in the corner of the San Diego zone. Ianiero worked it along the wall and connected with Bonk, who threw it past netminder Tom Lawson to give the Condors a 2-1 lead with 6:21 remaining until the third.

Following a slashing penalty to Scott Basiuk and a holding penalty to Dave Bonk, San Diego went on a late 5-on-3 with over eight minutes remaining, but the Condors would hold the Gulls without a shot.

At the end of the scoreless third, the Gulls would pull Tom Lawson for the extra skater, but Bakersfield kept San Diego at bay on their way to the 2-1 victory.

Ryan Munce earned the victory, stopping 41 of 42 San Diego shots. Tom Lawson was credited with the loss despite making 32 saves on 34 Bakersfield attempts

Other notes: Tonight was Bonk's first game since suffering a sprained ankle on January 13th against San Diego. After being awarded an assist on Tuesday against Alaska and assisting on St. Jacques' goal, Sean Venedam extended his Condors season-high point streak to seven games. Kevin St. Jacques extended his home point streak to nine games with his goal.

On Saturday, February 4th, 93.1 Pirate Radio and Carl's Jr. present Playing Card Giveaway & Poker Night as the Condors on the Las Vegas Wranglers. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a deck of Condors Playing Cards.
