Gulls Come Up Short In Bako, Fall 2-1

February 3, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Dave Bonk notched the game-winner short-handed midway through the second period and netminder Ryan Munce made it stand-up, leading the Bakersfield Condors to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Gulls Friday night, before 6,615 at Rabobank Arena.

San Diego (19-17-5) out-shot Bakersfield (17-16-5) by a 42-34 margin, but Munce was just about perfect. The Condors back-stop, who also beat the Gulls 4-1 on Jan. 22, has now turned away 78 of 80 shots in the last two head-to-head meetings.

Tom Lawson finished the game with 32 saves, but suffered the hard-luck loss, which combined with Long Beach's Friday night triumph over Las Vegas puts San Diego EIGHT points out of second place. Bakersfield is now just four points back of the Gulls in the Pacific Division.

Things started out positive for the Gulls, as Steve Hildenbrand put home a power-play goal 13:42 into the game. Richard Keyes, who had the puck at the left post, found a wide-open Hildenbrand across the crease and San Diego's leading scorer easily tapped it past Munce. It was his 16th goal of the season, nine of which have come against the Condors.

Former Gull Kevin St. Jacques tied it 3:58 into the second period, moments after a minor penalty to Darren Clark expired. Sean Venedam carried the puck down the left wing and fed an open Bonk, whose shot was stopped by Lawson. St. Jacques picked up the rebound, however, and punched it home for his 14th marker.

Bonk netted the short-handed and game-winning tally at 13:39 of the second. Defenseman Scott Basiuk stole the puck behind the Gulls net and slipped a pass to the bottom of the right circle, where Bonk beat Lawson high blocker-side. It was his 10th goal of the year and the 13th short-handed goal San Diego has allowed, tied with Columbia for the most in the ECHL.

The Gulls out-shot Bakersfield 18-9 in the third period and had a two-man advantage for 43 seconds, but couldn't draw even. San Diego finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Condors failed all eight times with the extra attacker.

Notes: The Gulls have successfully killed 96 of 106 penalties during the last 16 games (90.6 percent)... They are only 6-for-62 on the power play during the last 10 games (9.7 percent)... San Diego is 5-2 against the Condors this season, but have dropped the last two meetings... Hildenbrand has 16 points (9g, 7a) in seven games against Bakersfield... The Gulls are 7-5-1 in their last 13 road games... Tyler Weiman was recalled by Lowell of the American Hockey League...

San Diego's six-game road trip continues Saturday in Long Beach, with game-time set for 7 p.m. The Gulls will then prepare for a two-game set in Utah (Wednesday and Friday, Feb. 10).
