Gladiators Beat Rays, 3-2

Scott Mifsud posted a goal and an assist while Jeff Campbell's 49th career goal proved to be the game winner as Gwinnett beat South Carolina 3-2 on Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

South Carolina opened up a 1-0 lead 3:16 into the first period. Matt Reid posted the goal as he was parked all alone in the slot and beat Gladiators goaltender Tuomas Tarkki off a feed from Craig Olynick.

Olynick then gave the Stingrays a two goal advantage later in the first period. Tarkki made the initial save but the puck deflected high in the air and ended up in the net for the South Carolina goal. Marty Clapton and Jeff Legue picked up the assists on the goal at 14:37 of the first period.

Scott Mifsud got the Gladiators on the board and within a goal as he posted his 13th of the season. Milan Gajic picked up an assist on the marker clearing the puck into the slot where Mifsud fired the puck past Stingrays netminder for the goal. Derek Nesbitt also had an assist on the goal at 18:37 of the first.

In the second, Adam Smyth found a loose puck in the slot and flipped it past Parley for his sixth goal of the year. Mifsud and Jon Awe hooked up to post the assists on the goal 3:26 into the second period.

Jeff Campbell's 49th career goal gave the Gladiators their first lead of the night. Campbell found a rebound in the slot and punched the puck home for the marker. Brad Schell and Troy Milam picked up the assists on the goal as they set up the powe play tally at the 5:25 mark of the second.

The Gladiators clamped down defensively in the third period especially during the final two minutes of the game as South Carolina pulled the netminder Parley while on the power play for a 6-on-4 advantage. Tarkki made nine third period saves including a breakaway chance, stoning South Carolina's Finnerty with less than 20 seconds left in the third.

Gwinnett posted on one power play goal on 11 chances to improve to 29-9-5 on the season. With the win, Gwinnett remains in the top spot on the American Conference with 63 points on the year.
