Wheat Kings Sneak Past Tigers in Final Minutes
December 8, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
The Tigers travelled to Brandon on Tuesday night looking to extract a little revenge on the Wheat Kings. Last Saturday, the Wheat Kings spoiled the Tigers' Teddy Bear Toss game with a 4-1 victory.
The Wheat Kings started the scoring early in the first. Chad Nychuk found Nolan Ritchie in front of the net with a back hand pass for this 13th of the season. The Tigers would respond a few minutes later though to even the game. Daniel Baker's point shot bounced of the back boards and came back out in front. Noah Danielson and Lukas Svejkovsky both took a couple of whacks at it. The puck bounced off a few players and eventually found the back of the net for Svejkovsky's team leading 11th of the season. The Tigers would add another one late in the period to head into the intermission with a 2-1 lead. 11 seconds into a powerplay Ashton Ferster redirected Daniel Baker's point shot into the bottom right corner for his sixth of the campaign. Noah Danielson also picked up his second assist of the period on the go ahead goal.
Nate Danielson, Noah's brother, tied things up 6:07 into the second frame with a nice wrister from the left wing for his sixth of the year. Brandon would reclaim the lead midway through the period while on the man advantage. After some battling in front of the net, the puck made it's way back to Chad Nychuk who found Ridly Greig at the bottom of the right circle for a one timer. The Tigers would strike again late in the period though to tie the game at three apiece. A pinching Reid Andresen would score his first of the season of some nice tic tac toe passing from Teague Patton and Brayden Boehm.
The Wheat Kings would score early again in the third to take the lead. Ridly Greig got his second of the game and team leading 14th of the season. Chad Nychuk found Greig down low on the goal line for a sharp angled shot. Nychuk's assist was his fourth of the game. The back and forth game continued as the Tigers quickly responded. Rhett Parson evened the game at 4-4 with his first of the season from Andrew Basha and Lukas Svejkovsky. Parson found the back of the net with a wrister from the top of the right circle. Although it looked like the game might head to an extra frame, the Wheat Kings were able to capitalize on a late power play opportunity. Brett Hyland chipped a rebound over Beckett Langkow that just found the back of the net to give Brandon a late one goal lead. The Tigers would pull the goalie in an attempt to score another late period goal. Unfortunately, Marcus Kallionkieli found the empty cage for his sixth of the year to secure the Wheat Kings victory.
Beckett Langkow (2-5-1-1) got the start in net for the Tigers. He made 31 saves including a number of highlight reel stops.
