Warriors Add Prospects from Texas and California in US Priority Draft
December 8, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors made back-to-back selections during the 2021 WHL US Priority Draft on Wednesday morning.
Moose Jaw picked Texas-born defneceman Austin Doyle with the last pick in the first round and then selected California product Tyler Chiovetti with the first pick in the second round.
Doyle plays with the Dallas Stars Elite 15U team and has six goals and nine points in 37 games this season.
The Odessa, Texas product had one goal and three points in 27 games last season.
"He's a puck moving defenceman, he's got pretty good size, smart, we watched a lot of video on him," Warriors general manager Jason Ripplinger said.
"He's a player that we zoomed in on and we're happy to bring him to the organization."
Chiovetti is from Redondo Beach, California and plays for the Los Angeles Jr. Kings 15U AAA team.
In 32 games this season, he has 13 goals and 27 points. Last season, he scored 33 goals and 72 points in 61 games with the 14U AAA team.
"Lots of skill," Ripplinger said on Chiovetti. "He's a smaller player who can really skate, shoot the puck and create offence."
This is the second US Priority Draft held by the Western Hockey League.
Ripplinger said it gives the Warriors an opportunity to select American players that they may not focus on during the annual bantam draft.
"Obviously, the American teams go hard at those players during the bantam draft and we don't get a chance to recruit those players or even draft them," he said. "When we do the bantam draft, we're more focused on the Canadians, this way gives us an opportunity to get a couple Americans."
The Warriors' front office will now turn its attention to Thursday's WHL Prospects Draft, which is being held in December after May's WHL Bantam Draft was postponed to allow more time to scout the 2006 age group.
Moose Jaw selects 16th overall in the first round on Thursday. Follow the draft live at whl.ca/draft.
