Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Winnipeg, MB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (19-4-2-1) power play proved deadly on Wednesday night as it clicked three times in their 3-2 win over the Winnipeg ICE (22-3-1-0) at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

The two top ranked teams in the CHL did not disappoint in the opening 20 minutes as they skated in a fast-paced and physical opening frame that saw the two teams trade goals from their defencemen.

Just 2:02 into the game, Nolan Orzeck opened the scoring for the ICE as he let fly a point shot that caromed in off an Edmonton defender.

The early goal against seemed to wake the Oil Kings up as they began to buzz around the offensive zone. On the Oil Kings first power play of the game, Brendan Kuny looked to have tied the game up after he was spotted wide-open in the right-wing circle but was robbed by Winnipeg goaltender Gage Alexander who went with the old-school two-pad stack to keep his team in front.

The Oil Kings, however, would not be denied on their second man-advantage as Simon Kubicek took a pass in the left-wing circle and wired a one-timer through Alexander for the equalizer at 9:21 of the period.

The second period was much more tightly defended than the first, but in the final five minutes of the middle stanza it looked as Edmonton had taken a 2-1 lead. After the Oil Kings won a defensive zone faceoff, they raced the length of the ice on a 3-on-2 rush and after Jalen Luypen took a drop pass, he ripped home a wrist shot off the cross bar and in, but the play was negated after it was determined, after the fact, that the Oil Kings were guilty of a high-sticking penalty. The Oil Kings penalty killers answered the bell as they were able to kill off the four-minute Winnipeg power play to keep the teams deadlocked at the second intermission.

In the third period, the Oil Kings would take their first lead of the game at 7:36 after Jacob Boucher spotted an open Josh Williams in front, who one-timed the puck off the far post and in on an Edmonton power play. Winnipeg quickly answered as Skyler Bruce converted a backdoor tap-in off a nifty setup by Conor Geekie just 44 seconds after Edmonton took the lead.

The Oil Kings power play would prove to be the difference in the hockey game though, as after Sequoia Swan was issued a five-minute major for interference on Kaiden Guhle, it was Guhle who scored the dagger as he pumped a slapshot past Alexander from the slot with 6:56 remaining on the clock.

Sebastian Cossa turned away 25 shots for his eighth straight win, while Alexander stopped 34 for the ICE. The Oil Kings went three-for-four on the power play, the ICE went zero-for-four.

Next up, the Oil Kings head to Brandon on Friday night to take on the Wheat Kings at 6:00 PM.
