Swift Current Broncos react after the overtime winner against the Prince Albert Raiders
(Swift Current Broncos)
Prince Albert, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (10-12-2-1) staved off a furious comeback by the Prince Albert Raiders (9-12-1-1) thanks to Josh Davies's overtime winner at the Art Hauser Centre on Tuesday night.
The Broncos jumped ahead 1-0 halfway through the first period when Chase Lacombe spotted Caleb Wyrostok cutting across the neutral zone and fed him the puck. Wyrostok tipped the puck ahead on his backhand then stepped around the Raiders defenceman before beating Tikhon Chaika over the glove on a breakway with his seventh of the season. Lacombe and Brady Birnie picked up assists on the goal.
Grayson Burzynski then scored his first WHL goal two minutes later. A nice give-and-go play between. Burzynski and Cole Nagy saw Burzynski with the puck in the slot, but he fanned on his shot. He then recovered the puck and pulled it to his backhand, sliding it past Chaika to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead after one period.
Sam McGinley pushed the Broncos lead to 3-0 early in period two as his centering pass from the goal line went off a Raider skate and in. Josh Davies and Nagy got assists on the goal.
Prince Albert answered quickly as Sloan Stanick took a cross-crease pass just 29 seconds after McGinley's goal to cut the Bronco lead to 3-1.
The two teams played 4-on-4 after Wyrostok was ejected for a kneeing major on Landon Kosior, and Owen Pickering restored the three-goal lead with a shot from the slot past the blocker of Chaika. Carter Serhyenko took over in the Raiders net after the goal.
The Raiders responded quickly again as Ozzy Weisblatt banked a shot from below the goal line in to cut the Broncos lead to 4-2 after two.
Carson Latimer scored just 45 seconds into the third period as the Broncos lead was down to one before the Raiders would pull even.
Kosior threw the puck on net from the right wing and Cale Sanders batted his own rebound out of mid-air to tie the game at four.
With nothing solved in regulation, the two teams went to overtime where there were odd-man rushes each way, though Prince Albert didn't record a shot on net in overtime.
Josh Davies poked a puck through the legs of Wiesblatt in the Broncos zome and had just enough energy left to take off for a breakaway, beating Serhyenko under the glove to win the game for Swift Current, their third win in a row.
The Broncos now return home for their last home game as they welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Friday.
