Toledo Walleye News Release
(Reading, PA) The Toledo Storm (9-6-1) jumped out early in the first period, but the Reading Royals (7-8-3) were just as strong in the opening frame, responding with three unanswered goals to take 3-2 lead, one they would not relinquish as the Royals picked up a 4-2 victory at Sovereign Center in Reading on Friday night. Through the first six meetings between the two clubs this year, the home team has picked up every win.
The Storm's much-maligned power play went to work early, as Mike Walsh batted home a rebound at the 3:30 mark of the 1st period to give his team a 1-0 lead; Ken Magowan and Tim Songin added the assists on Walsh's 2nd goal of the year. Toledo, who is now 7-2-0 when they score first, added to their lead just four minutes later as Taylor Raszka notched his first professional goal at 7:28 to put the Storm up 2-0; Dan Watson and Chris Blight collected the assists on Razka's first goal.
Reading, though, also benefited from early power plays. During a 5-on-3 advantage for the Royals, John Snowden blasted one by Storm goaltender Stefan Liv to pull Reading within a goal at 10:01 of the 1st. The Royals would tally again to tie the game at 13:19 when James Hiebert put one past Liv. After a flurry of penalties were handed out towards the end of the period, Joe Zappala tallied an even-strength goal at 19:20 to give the Royals a 3-2 lead heading into the 1st intermission.
After a penalty and offensive filled first period, the teams skated even though the middle frame. Neither team was able to tally in the second period and only 2 power plays were dealt, one for either side. The defensive trend continued throughout the third period, with Toledo struggling to get shots on net in the final frame of regulation. With Toledo trying to tie in the final minute with an extra attacker, Chris Bala stole the puck away at his blue line and scored an empty net goal with just 2 seconds to go, capping off the 4-2 final score.
Stefan Liv had a very solid game between the pipes in his Toledo Storm debut, stopping 34 of 37 shots sent his way, but made them in a losing effort. His counterpart Ryan Munce collected 18 saves to earn his fourth victory of the season.
The Storm will now travel to Trenton for Saturday and Sunday meetings with
the Titans. Saturday's game will begin at 7:00pm and on Sunday, the puck
drops at 4:00pm. You can hear all the action of both games LIVE on 1520 AM
