Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League hosted their fourth annual Teddy Bear Toss Night last Saturday at Centennial Garden. It turned out to be the biggest night in the event's history, bringing in well over 4,600 stuffed animals.

Sponsored by CBS-29, KERN 1410 and the Home & Leisure Superstore, the Teddy Bear Toss also drew the fourth largest crowd in franchise history, at 7,968 fans. Paul Rosebush scored the big goal on the night, 4:59 into the first period. The teddy bears poured out onto the ice for several minutes, and it took the staff about 12 minutes to clear all the toys from the ice.

The event has brought in approximately 13,000 stuffed animals during its four years. The United Way of Kern County collected the bears and will donate them to local children during the holidays.

"We're all blown away at the response for this season's Teddy Bear Toss," said Condors President & GM Matthew Riley. "We'd like to thank all the fans for their generosity, as well as our sponsors for giving so much attention to this event. They made it not only our biggest Teddy Bear Toss ever, but one of the most successful in all of hockey. It was a spectacular sight to see the teddy bears, just flying through the air from the stands, and it was truly a remarkable night.

"The United Way is thrilled to be the benefactor of over 4,600 stuffed animals," said United Way of Kern County Director of Marketing Amanda Scheidemantel. "The Teddy Bear Toss is a great avenue for the community to get involved and make a difference in a child's life. This year, we have distributed stuffed animals all over the county. We want to thank the Condors and their great fans for everything.

The number of stuffed animals collected through the event has increased every season. Last year, 2,900 teddy bears were collected.

The Condors are back in action on Tuesday night against the San Diego Gulls at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:00pm. Tuesday's game features another charity collection, with the "Gotta Have Sole" shoe drive, sponsored by KGEO AM 1230 and Tel-Tec Security. Anyone donating a pair of new or used shoes will receive a free terrace ticket to the game. The shoes will be collected for the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, operated by Bethany Services.

Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden Box Office, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location. Season tickets and group outings may be purchased by calling 324-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Condors office next to Centennial Garden.

Condors droppings: The "Condors Coach's Show" will take place on Wednesday night this week, from 6-7pm at the Holiday Inn Select. The team is leaving for Anchorage on Thursday, bumping the show up a day. This week's guests include Head Coach Paul Kelly, defenseman David Bell and winger Nate Anderson.
