Bombers Notch Pair of Home Wins

December 2, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

The Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team (8-12-2) won a pair of home games (sandwiched around a road loss) to cap the month of November. The Bombers will now embark on a season-long, six-game road trip that will see stops in Atlantic City (two games), Johnstown, Lexington, Wheeling, and Trenton.

Below is a review of this past week's "3-in-3" against divisional rivals:

11/28/02- Lexington 2 @ BOMBERS 5

Chris M. Thompson's wrist shot through a screen from just inside the blueline beat goaltender Dan Murphy to break a 2-2 tie and ignite a three-goal third period as the Bombers snapped a four-game home and overall losing streak with a 5-2 victory at a special Thanksgiving game at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. After Thompson's fifth goal of the season at 8:16 of the third, Fred Slukynsky gave the Bombers a 4-2 edge at 16:38. Matt Poapst and Ryan Vince worked diligently along the boards to free the puck up for Slukynsky, who cut in front of the net and scored on a second effort chance against Murphy. Poapst tallied his first goal as a Bomber into an empty net from a sharp angle with three seconds remaining to cap the scoring. After a scoreless first period, the Bombers scored twice in the second, each time responding to a Lexington goal. Alex Mathieu's short-handed rebound goal put the Men O'War ahead 1-0 at 3:29 of the middle frame, but Jamie Ling tied the score at 6:41 when he followed up a Ryan Vince shot to the net. Mathieu worked a give-and-go on the power play with Brett Draney at 9:30 to put the lead back in Lexington's hands, but the Bombers once again rallied when Torrey DiRoberto one-timed Bomber newcomer Jason Crain's pass past Murphy at 18:49 for a power play conversion. Ryan Vince finished with three assists for the Bombers, while Doug Nolan (0-2), Poapst (1-1), and Ling (1-1) each had two points. The Bombers outshot Lexington 36-21 in the contest.

11/29/02 - BOMBERS 1 @ Cincinnati 5

The Cincinnati Cyclones used a four-goal second period to pull away in a 5-1 victory over the Dayton Bombers at the US Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati. Defenseman Steve Gallace led the way for the Cyclones with a pair of goals, while Ryan Gaucher had a goal and two assists. Matt Noga had three helpers, while Mike Casselman and Pat Rissmiller also tallied. Torrey DiRoberto scored his team-leading ninth goal for the Bombers in the first period on the power play. The goal was DiRoberto's third in as many games.

11/30/02 - Toledo 0 @ BOMBERS 3

Andrew Allen made 18 saves as the Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team blanked the Toledo Storm for the second time this season at the Ervin J. Nutter Center with a 3-0 triumph on Teddy Bear Toss Night. After a scoreless first period, Fred Slukynsky got the Bombers on the board with his sixth goal of the season at 2:32 of the second when he cut to the Toledo net from the boards, pulled goaltender Doug Teskey out of position, and sent a backhander into the goal. Andrew Ianiero scored the first of two goals at 14:06. Ben Knopp worked along the end boards to free the puck for Matt Poapst, who found Ianiero with a centering pass. The Bombers forward pushed the puck past Teskey to make it 2-0. Ianiero's power play slap shot at 18:35 went through a screen and into the top left-hand corner of the net to cap the second period and game scoring. The Bombers, who blanked Toledo 6-0 at the Nutter Center behind rookie Shane Bendera's 35 saves on October 27, this time helped Andrew Allen record a gooseegg. The Bombers were a perfect 7 for 7 on the penalty kill. Toledo, the first-place overall team in the ECHL entering the game, was handed its second straight shutout loss and for the first time this season lost back-to-back games.
