San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The West Coast Hockey League season is now in its eighth week and who would've thought that the San Diego Gulls would be sitting in third place with a record under .500? Well, that's exactly where the Blue and Orange are after splitting another weeks worth of games.

San Diego (8-9-1) has 17 points, seven behind the second place Bakersfield Condors. The Long Beach Ice Dogs and Fresno Falcons are right on the Gulls' heels, each trailing by one point... Dean Tiltgen continues to be a bright spot however, ranking second in the WCHL with 10 goals... Mike Garrow leads all defenseman with six goals, all of which have come on the power play... Dennis Purdie finally got off the shnide scoring his first goal of the season Friday... San Diego is looking to get healthy with 13 of its next 19 games at home...

TRANSACTIONS:

Goaltender Cris Classen, who was with the team during its 2001 Taylor Cup run, re-signed... San Diego also inked a contract for rookie Mike McGhan... Cory Cyrenne was activated from injured reserve and made his debut Friday night... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...

COMMUNITY UPDATE: Friday: The Gulls hosted their third annual "Teddy Bear Toss." This year's event saw more than 2000 stuffed animals tossed to the ice after the Gulls scored their first goal midway through the first period. The event was presented by San Diego Harley Davidson, and all bears were donated "Hope for the Holidays," a national charity to benefit underprivileged children.

Tuesday: Baby Gull and Gulls staff will attend an assembly at Logan Elementary School. As a part of the Gulls Adopt-A-School program, Nassco, "The Shipyard of Choice" has selected Logan Elementary as the beneficiary of 200 Gulls tickets. These tickets will be equally distributed over 10 separate games. The school will use the tickets as incentive for stellar attendance and academic excellence.

Saturday: Start your holiday season off right with an exciting afternoon with all the Gulls players! Steve Martinson will make a special appearance as Santa Claus as the team presents it's all-new "HOLIDAY SKATE WITH THE GULLS" on Saturday at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. For only $10, you'll skate with all of the Gulls players, and enjoy lunch with the team. LAST WEEK:

GULLS 3, Fresno 2 (SO); at San Diego, Tuesday, Nov. 26: It took the sixth round of the shootout, before San Diego was able to take care of the pesky Falcons. Teams traded a pair of goals in regulation before the game went to the extra period. Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Gulls tied it 13 seconds later in the first period. San Diego grabbed the lead early in the third, but that was short-lived as Fresno tied it 1:13 later.

Gulls 3, BAKERSFIELD 4; at San Diego, Friday, Nov. 29: Jason Ralph's tally with 6:23 left in the third period proved to be the game breaker as the Condors beat the Gulls and skated away with their eighth straight victory. San Diego scored three straight to jump ahead, but the Condors answered back with two of their own, including Ralph's game-winner.
