Wolves Win Two, Drop Two

BILOXI, Miss. – The Mississippi Sea Wolves opened week 8 by winning two games, then losing a pair. On Tuesday, the Sea Wolves blanked the Bandits, 3-0 at Jackson. Mississippi downed Baton Rouge 5-3 on Friday at the Wolves Den. Louisiana halted the Sea Wolves winning ways, by taking a 4-3 contest at the Cajundome on Saturday and then the IceGators shutout Mississippi 3-0 on Sunday at Biloxi.

After 23 games played, the Sea Wolves overall record sits at 13-8-2, for 28 points and second place in the Southwest Division. At home, the Sea Wolves have posted a record of 8-6-1. The road record for Mississippi stands at 5-2-1.

It's the second of three head-to-head contests. The Sea Wolves won the first meeting 4-3, on December 6 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Steffon Walby scored the game-winner and goaltender Greg Gardner turned away 20 of 23 to post the victory.

Dave Paradise paced the Sea Wolves attack, by picking up two goals and collecting an assist in the Mississippi win against Columbus.

Saturday, Dec. 7 at Jackson Bandits – 7:05 p.m. – Mississippi Coliseum, Jackson (Game 6 of Nextel Cup. Sea Wolves lead season series, 9 points to 2.)

The Sea Wolves won the last meeting at Jackson, 3-0 on November 26. The game was marred by a brawl and 251 total penalty minutes. Mississippi goaltenders Greg Gardner and Sean Matile combined on the shutout. It was the second time this season, Mississippi held Jackson off the scoresheet. The Sea Wolves blanked Jackson 2-0, on November 15 at the Wolves Den.

Former Sea Wolves forward Brent Gauvreau goes up against his former team for the first time. Gauvreau was acquired by Jackson in a trade last week with Augusta along with Darryl LaPlante, for Mike Oliveira and Mark Thompson.

Dave Paradise leads the Sea Wolves with four goals and four assists for eight points in the five games against the Bandits. Jackson's Jeff Bes has potted three goals and a helper in the games against Mississippi.

Sunday, Dec. 8 vs. Louisiana IceGators – 5:05 p.m. – Mississippi Coast Coliseum

The IceGators have had the Sea Wolves number this season, winning five of the six head-to-head meetings. Last week, Louisiana took a home and home set, winning 4-3 on Friday at the Cajundome and followed by blanking the Sea Wolves 3-0 on Saturday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Louisiana goaltender Frederic Cloutier stopped all 25 Mississippi shots to collect his first shutout of the season.

Shawn McNeil scored the game-winner on Saturday at the Wolves Den. McNeil has tallied six goals and picked up five assists in the six games against Mississippi this season. Steffon Walby leads the Sea Wolves with seven points (two goals, five assists) against the IceGators. Dave Paradise and Jim Baxter both have three goals in the games with Louisiana, tops in the goal department for Mississippi.

Player of the Week:

Rookie forward Jeff Hutchins scored one goal and added three assists over the four games during the week. The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Toronto, Ontario scored a goal in the Sea Wolves win at Jackson on Tuesday. He picked up an assist in the Mississippi victory on Friday against Baton Rouge and had two helpers on Saturday, as the Sea Wolves fell at Louisiana.

Goaltender of the Week:

Greg Gardner appeared in all four games last week, compiling a record of 1-2-0. The 6-foot, 190-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario posted a 2.86 goals against average and ..922 save percentage turning away 119 of 129 shots over the four games.

Injured Reserve:

Left wing Darryl Campbell and goaltender Sean Matile are on the 7-day injured reserve. Goaltender Mike Buckley along with defensemen David Cornacchia and Steve Bewley remain on the 30-day IR.
