Stingrays Trade Clapton
March 22, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that veteran forward Marty Clapton has been traded to the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the ECHL as part of a three team deal involving the Peoria Rivermen. Clapton will join the Ice Dogs, who will send left winger Phil Lewandowski to the Peoria Rivermen. The Stingrays will receive future considerations from the Rivermen before the 2005-06 season.
Clapton scored 21 points on eight goals and 13 assists in 51 games this season. The veteran came to the Stingrays before the 2000-01 season and won his second Kelly Cup that same year. Clapton is third on the all time Stingrays games played list with 322 games played. His 188 career points with the Stingrays place him seventh on the franchise list.
"Marty has been a big part of this franchise for the last five seasons, we will truly miss his leadership and ability," said Fitzsimmons. "Marty wanted to go to a quality team that was playoff bound. He will really help Long Beach down the stretch and in the post season."
The Stingrays needed to move a veteran after Captain Trevor Johnson returned to the team's lineup last week.
The Stingrays host the Greenville Grrrowl tonight at the North Charleston Coliseum at 7:05.
