Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Aces have acquired goaltender Matt Underhill, who played one game in the NHL last season for the Chicago Blackhawks, from the Mississippi Sea Wolves in exchange for goalie Lance Mayes and future considerations.

After going 13-8-3 with a 2.65 GAA and a .923 save percentage in 24 starts for Mississippi this season, Underhill received two promotions to the American Hockey League, earning a tie by stopping all 17 shots he faced in the one game he played for the St. John's Maple Leafs and finishing 1-2-1 in five appearances for the Providence Bruins. The 25-year-old Underhill shut Alaska out with 30 saves in a 3-0 win at Sullivan Arena December 18 (the only goalie to blank the Aces in Anchorage this season) and came back with 28 stops the next night before losing 3-2 in overtime.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Calgary Flames in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, the 6-2, 210-pound Underhill played four years at Cornell University, going 27-14-4 with a 1.84 GAA and a .925 save percentage in his final two seasons for the Big Red. He played for Alaska head coach Davis Payne during his rookie pro campaign of 2002-03, finishing 16-13-2 with a 2.81 GAA and a .907 save percentage in 33 games for the Pee Dee Pride. Last season, Underhill stopped 29 of 33 shots in losing his one start for Chicago in the NHL.

Mayes leaves Alaska with a 15-7 record to go along with a 2.65 GAA and a .905 save percentage. He saw his nine-game winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Bakersfield. Last year, Mayes set Aces single-season records for lowest goals against average (2.60) and highest save percentage (.908) while posting two shutouts, including one in his first pro start at Long Beach, and finishing with an 11-8-3 overall mark.

Alaska plays host to Las Vegas tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. in the opener of a three-game series against the Wranglers that continues Friday and Saturday night at Sullivan Arena. The Aces own a four-point lead in the West Division over second-place Bakersfield, who plays Long Beach tonight. All three games against Las Vegas at Sullivan Arena, as well as the road games against the Wranglers April 5, 8, and 9, will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and made available on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off. For tickets and 2005 playoff information, please call 258-ACES.
