Special Teams Shine in 5-0 P-Bruins Win
April 14, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds Saturday night 5-0, keeping the team alive in the race for the number three seed in the Atlantic Division. The P-Bruins got two goals from Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson along with goals from Jack Studnicka, Adam Payerl and Kenny Agostino while Zane McIntyre made his 44th start of the season in net.
The Providence special teams carried them in the opening period, scoring on both the power play and the penalty kill. Studnicka netted his first pro goal at 8:53, taking advantage of the game's first power play. Agostino received the puck at the left half-boards from Tommy Cross and fired a shot that Studnicka tipped past Springfield goalie Samuel Montembeault. That gave the rookie points in each of his first four professional games as Providence took a 1-0 lead. At 13:32, Forsbacka Karlsson doubled the lead despite the P-Bruins being short handed for the first time. He and Adam Payerl started a 2-on-1 break up ice, and all Forsbacka Karlsson had to to was tap in Payerl's perfect pass for his 14th goal of the season and make the score 2-0 Providence into the locker room.
The special teams domination continued early in the second, as Payerl scored on the power play just 2:56 into the second. He creeped in towards goal and wristed home his ninth goal of the season with just seconds left on the man advantage. Jakub Zboril and Zach Senyshyn picked up assists on the play as Providence took a 3-0 lead. That quickly became 4-0 as less than four minutes later Forsbacka Karlsson found the back of the net for the second time in the game. With helpers from Agostino and Connor Clifton, he beat Montembeault over the glove for his 15th goal of the season to give the team their first even strength goal of the game. Montembeault was pulled in favor of Harri Sateri, but the P-Bruins still brought a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.
Agostino put the final nail in the coffin at 10:03, scoring his 16 goal of the season. Forsbacka Karlsson fought hard in the right wing corner for the puck and centered it out to Agostino for the one-timer to make it 5-0 Providence. That tied the largest margin of victory of the year for the P-Bruins, and McIntyre did his part to ensure that held up. He earned his career-best seventh shutout of the season, a mark that now leads the league, as Providence won by a 5-0 final.
McIntyre stopped all 24 shots he faced in his 25th victory of the season, the fourth most in the AHL. Montembeault stopped 8 of 12 shots before being pulled while Sateri stopped 16 of 17 after entering in the second period. Providence was 2-7 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their regular season schedule tomorrow afternoon at the Dunk when the team welcomes these same T-Birds to town at 3:05pm.
