January 10, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release

GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL, proud affiliates of the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers have announced that NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION (a program of The Greenville News) will participate as a marketing partner for the annual Grrrowl Education Day. This years' game will be on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 10:35am against the Louisiana IceGators.

An anticipated crowd of over 6,000 local elementary and middle school children will attend the annual game. All students are provided learning packets that include information on language, geography, math, science, and the ice-making process. Teachers will also receive a test that can be used for post-event grading for the students. Doors will open 30 minutes early (9:00am) to allow for the many groups and busses that will be arriving at the BI-LO Center, and the groups can purchase a special lunch (in advance) for the day.

"We are excited about the new partnership between Newspaper In Education and the Grrrowl Education Day," stated Grrrowl GM Byron K. Rucker. "This 3rd annual event has been very well accepted by the local school system, and the ability to expose hockey to some new fans is always a plus for us. NIE had a very strong program, and the partnership is a natural move for both organizations." Making a difference in education in the Upstate - that's what the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program is all about. NIE is a 501c3 non-profit organization under the umbrella of The Greenville News. Its purpose is to enhance the fun, efficacy and value of education by providing the newspaper along with accompanying curriculum as a supplemental teaching tool to reinforce basic academic skills for all students throughout the Upstate. Newspapers offer a creative supplement to traditional schoolroom tools. They are living textbooks that are updated daily, teach about current events, have practical life-skills applications and outline initiatives taking place in the student's community. The Grrrowl will wear a special design jersey for two games - on education day, and again on that Saturday night. At noon on February 15th, the game-worn jerseys will be a part of an on-line auction on www.greenvilleonline.com. The on-line auction will continue until 12:00am (midnight) on Friday, February 18th, prior to the Grrrowl game that evening. The auction will continue (silent auction process) at the game through the second intermission, with the winning bids receiving the jerseys from the players after the completion of the game on the ice. All proceeds from the jersey auction will be donated to Center Ice Charities and designated for the NIE program.

The Grrrowl will be at home for the last of five straight as they host the Texas Wildcatters (7:05pm) for the third time this season. The Greenville Grrrowl will be collecting monetary donations on Tuesday, with the proceeds being given to Center Ice Charities. Center Ice will immediately forward the money on towards the American Red Cross International Response Fund to benefit Tsunami and Earthquake Victims in Southeast Asia. Please stop by the Fan Accommodations Table (section 114) or call Ryan Stewart at 864-250-4926 to make your donation.
