Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Calgary Flames of the NHL has assigned right wing Thomas Bellemare to the Charlotte Checkers. Head Coach Derek Wilkinson made the announcement today.

Bellemare was drafted in the seventh round of the NHL entry draft in 2003, #206 overall. The 6'3", 208-pound lefty currently has 82 penalty minutes in 29 games this season, with a total of 737 minutes since his career began in 2002-03 with the QMJHL Drummondville Voltiguers. The hardworking Bellemare will fit in well with the Checkers who have been known for their industrious efforts this season, in spite of the injuries that have recently plagued them.

"Thomas brings a much needed toughness and grit to our line-up," said Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson. "We are pleased that Calgary has the confidence in us to assist in Thomas' development."

Previously with the Texas Wildcatters, Bellemare met the Checkers on a weekend series and should be no stranger to the Checkers work ethic. He could be put to work as early as Wednesday when the Checkers face the Augusta Lynx at Cricket Arena.

This weekend, Charlotte takes on the Greenville Grrrowl and the Texas Wildcatters, Friday and Saturday night respectively. The Checkers lead the East Division with 40 points after a two game home stand against division rivals the Columbia Inferno and the Florida Everblades.
