Gulls battle through tough week
January 10, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ It was a tough week for the San Diego Gulls, who (as of Monday) sit in a fourth place tie with the Fresno Falcons and Las Vegas Wranglers. Not only because they lost three of four games... of course that doesn't help matters. But, with the injury list already filled up, players continued to drop like flies.
Fortunately for the Blue and Orange, however, some of those players will be back in the lineup this week. Andrew Canzanello, who missed five games with a bruised spleen, returned Saturday. Sean O'Connor, who missed one game with bruised ribs and a sore back, also was back in the lineup Saturday. Defensemen Evgueni Nourislamov and Nikita Korovkin should also be back Thursday.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Jan. 4 @ Las Vegas:
The Wranglers scored three times with the man advantage, beating the undermanned Gulls 4-2. It was the second straight game that San Diego could only dress two healthy defensemen and Las Vegas certainly took advantage. Scott Borders gave the Gulls an early 1-0 lead, but Vegas netted two straight power-play goals to go ahead 2-1. Mark Pederson tied it with a San Diego power-play marker, but the Wranglers answered again with two more tallies.
Jan. 5 vs. Peoria:
Randy Rowe scored twice and added an assist and Rejean Stringer notched three helpers, leading the Rivermen to a 5-2 victory over San Diego. Peoria dominated the first period, out-shooting the Gulls 18-4 and out-scoring them 3-1. Rowe's short-handed tally midway through the second period extended the Rivermen's lead to three goals before Brian Gornick scored late in the third period to cut the deficit back to two. Trevor Byrne, however, sealed the game with an empty-netter four seconds after Gornick's tally.
Jan. 7 @ Fresno:
ECHL All-Star Dan Tessier scored three goals and added an assist, David Brisson added a goal and three assists and Shaun Sutter chipped in with three helpers, leading the Falcons to a 9-5 whitewashing of the Gulls. It was a 1-1 game midway thorough the first period, but that's when Fresno took over. The Falcons scored twice more in the first, five times in the second and once more in the third, cruising to the victory. San Diego scored three goals late in the game to make it close, but it was too little too late.
Jan. 8 vs. Fresno:
Sylvain Deschatelets scored twice, including the game-winner 3:37 into overtime, leading the Gulls to a 4-3 win over the Falcons in the back-end of a home-and-home series. Fresno grabbed a 1-0 lead 45 seconds into the first period before Deschatelets tied it early in the second period with his first goal of the game. Fresno went back ahead 2-1, but Curtis Brown scored two straight goals to give San Diego a 3-2 cushion. The Gulls' lead was short-lived however, as Jason Weaver re-tied the game at the 8:51 mark of the third. That's how the game stayed until Deschatelets won it in overtime.
PLAYER NOTES:
Sean O'Connor, who had 11 goals and 16 assists in December, was selected as the ECHL Player of the Month... Canzanello, activated from injured reserve on Saturday, was named to the ECHL National Conference All-Star Team. Equipment manager Matt Mitchell was also selected to attend the All-Star Game... Brown has seven points (2g, 5a) in the last four games... Korovkin, who's missed the last six games with a bruised spleen, and Nourislamov, out the last six games with a sprained knee, could both be back in the lineup Thursday in Las Vegas... Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder), Sean Murphy (broken thumb), Guillaume Fournier (concussion-like symptoms) and Trevor Koenig (sore elbow) all remain on the injured list...
TEAM NOTES:
San Diego was outscored 26-15 during its five-game winless streak, which was a season high... The Gulls are 11-3-2 at home and 5-8-2 on the road... They have allowed 23 power-play goals in the last 15 games... San Diego ranks 27th overall on the penalty kill (77. 6 percent)... The Gulls have games in hand on everyone ahead of them in the standings...
UPCOMING GAMES:
The Gulls will play in Las Vegas Thursday at 7:05 p.m. and then in Long Beach Friday at 7:30 p.m. before coming home to face the Louisiana IceGators Saturday, Jan. 15. It will be a 7:05 p.m. start and the first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive a special pair of Gulls boxer shorts, courtesy of Coast-to-Coast Tax Service.
