Nailers Bomb Dayton in Shoot Out

The Nailers overcame a two-goal deficit and squandered a two-goal lead of their own before defeating the Dayton Bombers 1-0 in a shootout tonight at WesBanco Arena. Joe Guenther scored the only goal in the shootout while regulation ended in a 4-4 draw.

Joe Jensen, seeing his first action in Wheeling since December 5, scored two goals and added a fight in his best attempt to complete a Gordie Howe hat trick while leading the Nailers to the come-from-behind victory.

The Bombers opened the scoring 9:26 into the first period on a play that could have been whistled dead when a Dayton player collided with Andy Franck. The Bombers' Mike Berry easily flipped the puck past the incapacitated Franck for a power-play goal.

The Bombers took a 2-0 lead just 1:30 into the second frame when Scott Ford was able to beat Franck for his fifth goal of the year.

The Nailers, however, got the all-important third goal 3:17 into the second to make it 2-1. Wheeling was short handed when Ned Havern chipped the puck past center ice and raced toward the net.

Dayton goalie Adam Berkhoel made the decision to leave his crease to go after the puck as well.

Havern won the foot race and took the puck past the sprawling Berkhoel and walked the puck into the empty net for the Nailers first goal of the night.

With 13:18 remaining in the second, Joe Jensen, who just returned from Wilkes-Barre, scored to tie the game at two and extend his ECHL scoring streak to nine games.

Jensen was posted just outside Berkhoel's crease when Jon Smyth found him from behind the net, and he ripped a shot past the Bomber's net-minder. Joe Guenther got the second assist.

Jensen gave the Nailers a 3-2 lead two and a half minutes later when he took another pass from Smyth and beat Berkhoel for his eighth goal of the year. Cody Blanshan earned the other assist.

Jordan Cameron scored his seventeenth goal of the season at 11:29 of the second to give the home team a two-goal lead.

Cameron blasted a slapper past Berkhoel after receiving a pass from Jon Foster. Ryan Moren was credited with the second assist.

The Bombers, despite giving up four consecutive goals, did not go away. Scott Ford added his second goal of the game the get the Bombers back to within one with just under seven minutes to play in the second period.

The period ended with the Nailers leading 4-3.

The Bombers tied the game at four 4:20 into the third and final period. Petr Pohl one-time a shot that hit the crossbar over Franck's left shoulder and went in the net.

With the victory, the Nailers improve to 13-16-1-1 and remain within striking distance of first place in the compact North Division.
