Gladiators beat Chiefs, 4-3, in shootout

Duluth, Ga. (January 5, 2006) - The Gwinnett Gladiators edged the Johnstown Chiefs by a score fo 4-3 in a shootout on Friday night in Duluth, Ga.

Andre Deveaux opened the scoring for Johnstown when he gained the puck in the right wing corner, walked out and deked Gwinnett goaltender Dan Turple down and tucked the puck behind him for a 1-0 Johnstown lead.

With P.J. Atherton in the penalty box for cross-checking, Gwinnett evened the score at one-apiece as Jon Awe blasted a shot from the point past Chiefs goaltender Morgan Cey at the 5:57 mar of the second period.

Radek Smolenak would put the Chiefs up by a score of 2-1 less than 10 minutes later when he tipped a pass from Andre Deveaux through Turple's pads at 15:13 of the second period.

Just 3:43 into the third stanza, Chris Painchaud took a pass in the low slot and beat Cey on the blocker side with a wrist shot to even the score at two. Andre Deveaux would score his second of the game at the 8:12 mark, banging the rebound of his own shot past Turple to give Johnstown a 3-2 lead. Brad Schell would score the game tying goal for Gwinnett at 18:12 of the third period, putting a wrist shot from the top of the right-wing circle past Cey to even the score at three.

Colton Fretter scored on Gwinnett's second attempt in the shootout, as the Gladiators took the lead, but Radek Smolenak evened the shootout on Johnstown's third attempt. The shootout would stay even until Gwinnett's eighth attempt, when defenseman Matt York beat Cey to win the shootout for Johnstown. Cey made 59 saves, in cluding 31 in the third period and overtime, earning a shootout loss.

The next Chiefs home game is Monday, January 15, at 1:00 p.m. against the Wheeling Nailers when the kids have off for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
