Fort Wayne Komets News Release


Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets took 2 wins in 3 games for the week and moved into a first-place Eastern Conference tie with Port Huron with 24 points. Fort Wayne becomes the first team in the UHL to hit 12 wins and improved to 12-6-0 after 18 games and 7 weeks for a league best .667 point percentage.

Friday night the Komets whitewashed the River Otters 3-0 at Missouri. It was goaltender Tom Lawson's 3rd shutout of the season stopping all 20 Missouri shots in Fort Wayne's 5th straight road win. David-Alexandre Beauregard netted a pair including a short-handed tally and Michel Massie added the 3rd goal of the game.

Saturday the Komets dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting Quad City Mallards. It was the first Quad City win over Fort Wayne in 4 meetings this season. Lawson, playing his 50th career game, allowed 2 goals on 16 shots in the loss for his 8th straight game of allowing 2 goals or less. Colin Chaulk scored the lone Komet goal on the power play.

Sunday the Komets faced the Wings from Kalamazoo and entertained Fort Wayne fans with the first home shootout of the season and a 4-3 victory. Chaulk scored 2 power play goals and Kevin Bertram netted his 2nd goal of the season in regulation. In the extra frame Chaulk and Dustin Virag scored as the Komets took the shootout 2-1 on 5 attempts. The Komets defense allowed only 17 Kalamazoo shots as Scott Rideout made 2 saves on 5 shots before Lawson entered the game to make 12 saves on 12 shots in regulation. Lawson stopped 4 of 5 Wing shootout attempts to take his 9th win of the season in 13 games.

This week the Komets host Missouri in the traditional Thanksgiving Fort Wayne game at 7:35. Friday the Komets travel to Rockford for an 8:05pm faceoff (7:05 Rockford time) and return to Fort Wayne to host Missouri again Saturday night at 7:35.

Komet Players of the Week.....the Komet's nomination for UHL Goaltender of the Week is Tom Lawson. Lawson was 2-1-0 in 3 games played. He registered one shutout, his 3rd of the season and allowed 2 goals on 48 shots for a 0.79 goals against average and .958 save percentage. Lawson continues to lead UHL goalies with 9 wins, 3 shutouts, a 1.43 average and .940 save percentage. The Komet's Player of the week nomination is center Colin Chaulk. Chaulk scored 3 power play goals in 3 games played and scored a shootout tally in the Komet's 4-3 shootout win over Kalamazoo at home Sunday.

Komet defense is UHL's stingiest.....the Komet's defense continues to be the stingiest in the UHL allowing only 43 goals in 18 games for a league best 2.39 goals against per game (down from 2.47 last week) and 24.6 shots against per game.

Watching Milestones......David-Alexandre Beauregard 99 UHL career assists.....Jason Selleke has 98 career points.

41st Thanksgiving on ice Thursday.....the Komets will play their 41st home Thanksgiving game Thursday when they play host to the Missouri River Otters at 7:35pm. It will be the 4th Komet UHL home game on the holiday and 41st overall in the franchise's history in Fort Wayne. The Komets are 2-1-0 on Turkey Day since joining the UHL and 24-13-3 all time. Last season the Komets shut out (Doug Teskey) Port Huron 2-0 on Thanksgiving night.

ALMOST an $11,111 winner from One Eleven Design.....Kevin Bertram's goal with 1 minute 23 seconds remaining in the 2nd period Sunday almost won Mr. Scott Isaacson $11,111. Mr. Isaacson was selected as Sunday night's One Eleven Design score sweepstakes contestant. One lucky fan is chosen at each Komet home game for the chance to win $11,111 if the Komets score an official goal with exactly 1 minute 11 seconds remaining in any of the 3 regulation periods of play. Get in the Zone.....the Komets and Hagerman Construction, the main contractor for the renovation of the Memorial Coliseum, have set up the "Komet Construction Zone" for the 2002-03 season giving local children's organizations a chance to see Komet hockey. 50 tickets to sit free in the "Construction Zone" will be donated to a local children's organization. In addition to the free tickets, groups will receive official Hagerman construction helmets and more courtesy of Hagerman Construction and the Komets.
