November 25, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Another week has gone by and the San Diego Gulls (7-8-1) are still stuck in third place in the West Coast Hockey League. The Blue and Orange trail the Idaho Steelheads by 11 points for first place and the sizzling Bakersfield Condors by three points for second place. San Diego is looking to get healthy however playing six out of its next eight games at home.
No Gulls player is in the top 10 in league scoring. Dean Tiltgen and R.J. Enga are both tied for 11th with 15 points apiece... Tiltgen, however, is third in the WCHL with nine goals... Clayton Read's modest four-game point streak ended Tuesday night. He was last weeks' WCHL Player of the Week... Jamie Black was unable to suit up Tuesday with a sore leg. It was Black's first missed game since the 1999-00 season (188 games)...
TRANSACTIONS:
The Gulls released rookie Michael Lanthier, Aaron Plumb and Curtis Cruickshank last week... Goaltender Cris Classen is in town and expected to sign later this week... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...
COMMUNITY UPDATE: Nov. 22: Dan Cousineau and David Neale participated in an assembly at Chula Vista Middle School to kick-off their fundraising efforts with the Blue and Orange. The school will sell tickets to a specific Gulls game, and $5.50 from every ticket sold will be given back to the school.
Nov. 29: The Gulls will host their third annual San Diego Harley Davidson Teddy Bear Toss to benefit "Hope for the Holidays." All fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to toss onto the ice after the Gulls score their first goal of the game. The teddy bears will be collected and donated to "Hope for the Holidays," a national charity to benefit underprivileged children.
Dec. 10: Six Gulls players will participate in Junior Seau Foundation's eighth annual "Shop With A Jock." The event will allow approximately 200 underprivileged children the opportunity to shop for gifts for their loved ones.
Each child will shop with an athlete from the Chargers, Gulls, Padres or local college athletic team. For more information on "Shop With A Jock," please call the Junior Seau Foundation at 858-244-7328 ext 102.
LAST WEEK:
GULLS 0, Fresno 2; at Fresno, Tuesday, Nov. 19: It was the fourth game in five nights for San Diego, but arguably its best played of the road trip. Unfortunately for the Gulls, both Fresno goaltenders showed up. Terry Friesen and Mark Gowan combined for 27 saves, leading the Falcons to the 2-0 whitewashing over the Blue and Orange.
San Diego controlled the play through the first two periods, but still trailed 1-0. Tempers flared midway through the third period, which saw Trevor Koenig and Friesen square off at center ice. Both netminders were ejected and replaced by Cruickshank and Gowan. Neither back-up was tested however, and Kris Porter's empty-netter with 30 seconds left sealed the win. Fresno is now 3-0 vs. the Gulls this season.
THIS WEEK:
The Gulls kick-off its stretch of home games Tuesday against Fresno and Friday against Bakersfield. Both games start at 7 p.m. Friday's game will feature the third annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by San Diego Harley-Davidson. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
