Bombers Look Ahead to Thanksgiving Tilt after 0-3 Weekend
November 25, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
The Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team (6-11-2) went 0-3 this past weekend in a home "3 games-in-3 nights sequence" played at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. The Bombers will next experience a home-road-home "3-in-3" starting this Thursday at a special Thanksgiving home game against the Lexington Men O'War. Below is a review of this past weekend's games:
11/22/02- Lexington 4 @ BOMBERS 2
Despite being outshot by the Dayton Bombers 40-26, including a 19-6 margin in the third period, the Lexington Men O'War used a three-goal second period to prevail 4-2 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. Mark Smith (PP), Van Burgess, and Fraser Clair (SH) tallied in the middle period for the Men O'War. Clair's goal came with 49 seconds left in the frame. The Bombers mounted a comeback charge in the third period, thanks to even strength goals by Andrew Ianiero and Chris B. Thompson, but Joe Vandermeer locked up the win for Lexington with an empty-netter with 57 seconds remaining.
11/23/02 - Wheeling 3 @ BOMBERS 2
For the first time this season, the Nailers bested the Bombers. Zenon Kenopka broke a 2-2, third period tie with a rebound goal at 11:28. Tom Nemeth produced a power play goal and an assist for the Bombers, while Fred Slukynsky netted a short-handed tally. Chris M. Thompson recorded two helpers for the Bombers in the loss, while Jamie Ling extended a point-scoring streak to four with an assist. Mario Larocque (PP) and Michel Ouellet scored the other goals for the Nailers, who won for the first time against the Bombers this season in four head-to-head clashes (1-2-1).
11/24/02 - Johnstown 5 @ BOMBERS 2
Once again, a three-goal period by the opposition was the difference in a Bombers' home loss. This time, the first period was the Chiefs' friend. J.F. Boutin, Jim Leger, and Andy Doktorchik notched even-strength goals 7:43 apart. The Bombers were the dominant team throughout the game, however, outshooting the Chiefs 52-24, including a 20-9 mark in the second period. Torrey DiRoberto utilized a spectacular individual effort to blow past defender Brent Bilodeau and roof a shot past goalie Peter Aubry at 1:54 of the third period to cut the Chiefs' lead to 3-1, but Dmitri Tarabrin banged in his own rebound at 10:47 to reestablish the Chiefs' three-goal advantage. Andrew Ianiero scored the other Bombers' goal on a deflection off a Doug Nolan shot to make it 4-2 at 11:16, but Sam St. Pierre, who assisted on two scores, sent a shot into an empty net with 1:18 remaining to secure the Chiefs' win. Nolan and fellow defender Tom Nemeth would hit goal posts in the game for the Bombers. Those shots were not counted among the Bombers' 52 at goalie Peter Aubry.
BOMBER BITES: During the Bombers' current four-game losing streak (overall and at home), the Bombers have outshot the opposition 164-103. The Bombers' 52 shots on Sunday versus Johnstown matched a team season-high set November 15 vs. Wheeling ¬Â¦ D Chris B. Thompson recorded his first professional goal in Friday's 4-2 loss vs. Lexington ¬Â¦ W Trevor Ettinger already has more points (two assists) in 17 games played this season than he had in 48 games played with the Bombers in 2001-2002 (one assist) ¬Â¦ F Andrew Ianiero has five goals and three assists in eight games played with the Bombers since he was added to the roster November 8. He has four goals and an assist in his last five contests ¬Â¦ F Jamie Ling had a team season-best four-game point scoring streak (1-4-5) from 11/15-11/23 ¬Â¦ F Chris M. Thompson leads the Bombers in assists (11) and points (15) ¬Â¦ After the Bombers' "3-in-3" that begins Thursday and ends on Saturday, the team will play a season-high six straight road games from 12/4-12/14.
ALUMNI REPORT: Goaltender Karl Goehring, who was a key member of the Bombers' 2001-2002 team that advanced all the way to the Kelly Cup Finals, has been performing magnificently for the Syracuse Crunch, the Bombers' American Hockey League affiliate, this season. On Sunday night against the Bulldogs, he recorded his second consecutive shutout and fourth in his last five games, stopping all 26 Hamilton shots, en route to his fifth victory of the season. It is the second time this season Goehring has had back-to-back shutouts. Goehring has allowed only one goal in his last five games (0.20 goals against average and a .993 save percentage (145 saves - 146 shots)). Goehring has allowed only one goal in his last 320:18 of play. Earlier this month he set a franchise record for consecutive shutout minutes, going 197:04 without allowing a goal (November 8 - 16), breaking J.F. Labbe's record of 192:40 set last season. Entering this week, Goehring leads all American Hockey League goaltenders with a 0.82 goals against average, a .971 save percentage and four shutouts. Goehring, the smallest player in the AHL at 5-7, 150 pounds, has appeared in a total of nine games for the Crunch this season with a 5-1-0 record. A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Goehring is the Crunch's all-time leader in goals against average (a minimum of 20 games played) with a career 2.04 mark. The Columbus Blue Jackets, the Bombers' NHL affiliate, signed Goehring on May 7, 2001, following a heralded college career at North Dakota (WCHA) in which he led his club to the National Championship in 1999-00.
