Atlanta Gladiators News Release
A quick Start: Forward Brad Schell collected a combined 7 points in the Gladiators first two games. The Scott, Saskatchewan native figured in every goal in the Gladiators 4-2 win over South Carolina on Friday night. He added three assists in Saturday's 6-5 loss at Augusta to finish the week with 7 (2g, 5a) points. His seven points leads Gwinnett in scoring so far this season.
Back to Back: Defenseman Jon Awe and forward Mike Vigilante each have a pair of goals for the Gladiators, two games into the 2006-07 season. Both scored a goal in each of the Gladiators first two games starting the team's first goal scoring streaks of the season for Gwinnett. Awe is looking to eclipse his career best 14 goals posted last season while Vigilante is looking to surpass his 30 goal output during the 2004-05 season.
A first: Colton Fretter collected his first professional point, an assist, in the Gladiators 4-2 win over South Carolina on Friday night. He then added his first professional goal in the Gladiators 6-5 loss at Augusta on Saturday night. He defelected Jon Awe's slapshot at the point past Augusta netminder McKee for the marker in the second period. The forward shares fourth in scoring on the Gladiators with two point in two games this season.
And another first: Roswell, Georgia, native Dave Caruso made 33 saves to lead the Gladiators past the South carolina Stingrays 4-2 on Friday night in his first professional start. He made 10 saves in the first period, 8 in the second and made 15 in the third, including a handful of key saves down the stretch, for the win. Caruso became the eigth Gladiators goaltender to win his first start between the pipes for Gwinnett.
On the Power Play: The Gladiators have posted a combined five power play goals in their first two games of the 2006-07 season. This early in the season, Gwinnett is on pace to finish the year with 180 power play goals. Although unlikely to finish with that many this season, the Gladiators finished last season leading the league in power play goals with 114, one shy of the ECHL record of 115, set by Knoxville during the 1995-96 season.
MVP numbers: Jeff Campbell quietly collected 3 assists in the Gladiators 4-2 win over South Carolina on Friday night. He added a goal in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Augusta for four points on the season.
