ECHL Reading Royals

Seems like old times

October 23, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Larry Courville returned to the Sovereign Center on Sunday, ostensibly to become the first person ever to be inducted into the brand new Reading Eagle Wall of Honor on the Sovereign Center Concourse. But, as long as he was in the building, I suppose there was no reason he couldn't suit up-and play-and score a goal, after all he is "The Legend". So he did just that. But that wasn't all. In fact, he served as a principal spark plug in a Royals' come from behind victory, in a game where the team found itself trailing by two goals late in the second period and somewhat lacking in emotion. But emotion is something Larry's never been accused of lacking and comebacks are something for which Royals have already shown somewhat of a proclivity. On Friday, Greg Hogeboom scored a three-onfive short-handed goal to complete a come from behind win in the season opener against the Trenton Titans. Of course, the lone blemish on the Royals' record so far is the shootout loss to the Titans on Saturday night in the home opener, when the Royals were unable to hold three separate two goal leads. Maybe that night the team could have called on a legend to come in and show us all how to close out a win-and a career-or then again......

TOP TEN NOTES OF THE WEEK

1. Arpad Mihaly racked up back-to-back multi-goal games this week, scoring two on Saturday in the 5-4 shootout loss to the Trenton Titans and scoring two more on Sunday in the team's 5-3 come from behind victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots.

2. Greg Hogeboom had back-to-back multi-point games for the Royals this weekend, scoring a short-handed game winner (and assisting on the Royals' first goal of the season) in Friday's 3-2 win in Trenton and racking up three assists in the Royals' 5-4 shootout loss to the Titans on Friday.

3. Both of the Royals' game winning goals this week were scored in the third period while the team was playing short-handed. Greg Hogeboom scored an unassisted three-on-five short-handed goal at the 3:53 mark of the third period on Friday to make the score 3-2, Reading; and James Hiebert's shorthanded goal at the 8:49 mark of the third proved to be the difference in Reading's 5-3 win over Pensacola on Sunday.

4. Defenseman Jason Becker's first goal in North American pro hockey was the Royals' first goal of the season. Becker, who is technically a rookie under the rules of the ECHL, played seven seasons in Europe and scored 52 goals in 301 games in Germany and England before joining the Royals this season.

5. James Hiebert racked up the first 'Gordie Howe Hattrick' of the season for Reading on Sunday. Hiebert not only scored the game winning goal, he also racked up a pair of assists (and played to a +3) and topped it off with a tilt against Pensacola's Tyler Liebel right at the conclusion of the first period of play.

6. Forward Kevin Saurette scored a goal (Reading's second) in the Royals' season opener. Saurette, whose goal tied things at two 1:53 into the third period, had the 'unfortunate' distinction of scoring the Royals' last goal of the 2005-06 season in Game Four of the North Division Semi-Final against the Wheeling Nailers. Saurette also had the 'unfortunate' distinction of being the only Royal to score in Saturday's shootout against Trenton.

7. In the Royals' season opener in Trenton, Reading trailed the Titans, 2-1, entering the third period of play but were able to come back and win. Last season, the Royals entered the third period trailing 21 times and compiled a record of 4-17-0 in those games.

8. On the flip side, the Royals gave up three separate two goal leads on Saturday to end regulation time in tie with the Titans at 4-4. The Royals lost their first shootout of the season to the Titans, as Reading's shooters went 1 for 5 while Trenton scored twice in their five shootout attempts. Last season the Royals went 6-3 in overtime and were 2-4 in the shootout.

9. Dave Borrelli scored his first point as a pro this weekend when he picked up an assist on James Hiebert's first goal of the season at the 5:30 mark of the first period in Reading's 5-4 shootout loss.

10. Yutaka Fukufuji stopped 48 of the first 51 shots he faced this season, picking up the 3-2 win in Trenton on Friday by stopping 35 of 37 shots-many in spectacular fashion. On Saturday, Fukufuji picked up right where he left on Friday, stopping 13 of the first 14 shots of the game against Trenton, but he had to leave that game at the 7:55 mark of the second period, after Trenton's Les Haggett collided with Fukufuji in the crease.

UNSUNG HERO OF THE WEEK

Last week, Malcolm MacMillan picked up right where he left off last season-well, almost. Because Malcolm's week started off in a place he had yet to be in his pro hockey career: an AHL game as a member of the Hershey Bears. However, he was right where we needed him in the three games played by the Royals this week. He assisted on two goals, including serving as the principal initiator of James Hiebert's goal that ended up winning the game on Sunday. Malcolm was also, well, Malcolm. He stirred the pot a bit when needed; and he knew how to keep it between the ditches when that was required.

CLOSING NOTES

1. In his last 21 regular season ECHL games with the Wheeling Nailers (05-06) and the Royals (06- 07), Arpad Mihaly has racked up 36 points (15g - 21a = 36pts).

2. In the first two games of this season, Greg Hogeboom picked up at least one point, extending a personal point streak with the Royals to fourteen games that dated back to December 12, 2005, when he was re-called by the Manchester Monarchs (where he remained for the rest of the season). In those fourteen games, Hogeboom picked up 27 points (9g - 18a =27pts). That streak was snapped Sunday when Hogeboom was kept off the scoresheet.

3. Goaltender Ryan Munce picked up his first win as a member of the Royals in Sunday's 5-3 win over Pensacola. Munce stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced from the Ice Pilots. Munce saw his first action as a member of the Royals under somewhat trying circumstances. On Saturday, Yutaka Fukufuji started the game but had to leave at the 7:55 mark of the second period due to injury. Munce came on in substitution and stopped 17 of the 20 shots he faced through 37:05 of action and 3 of 5 in the shootout.
